AMEA RECAP FROM PRESIDENT JENNIFER HAMILTON
A few of those highlights are:
- our first AZ Assembly (August 2015)
- a new electronic newsletter with articles, deadline reminders and updates
- better communication through president's meetings with AMEA, ABODA, ACE and AzSGM presidents
- premier of a conference app (guidebook) in 2017
- Administrator clinic added at this year's conference
- addition of director professional development offerings at middle school all-states
- revamping of the Hall of Fame awards criteria and nomination process
- the recognition of David Waggoner as a Lowell Mason fellow
In addition, in the last two years, I had the honor of representing Arizona at the National Assembly and in division meetings. Arizona continues to be a great model for collaboration and a community-oriented spirit that is not often found in other state music educators organizations.
I am proud of these initiatives and accomplishments and am very grateful to the AMEA board for their support and follow through. I am also thankful to the ACE, ABODA, AzSGM boards and our AMEA members.
Probably the greatest reward as president has been getting to know and work with our committed and outstanding colleagues across the state. The camaraderie within the Arizona musical community is truly an inspiration.
With much appreciation,
Jennifer Hamilton
ABODA NEWS FROM PRESIDENT BILL HUMBERT
Dear Colleagues:
We come to the end of another incredible, and incredibly busy school year here in Arizona. And what a year it has been! I am so humbled to be able to serve the wonderful teachers and students in our music education community. From the entire ABODA Board of Directors, thank you for all you do to make a difference every day in the lives of your students and school communities. You are all super heroes in our book.
This has been a stellar year in terms of school participation in our events throughout the state. Another amazing fall marching season with many high level performances, over 200 ensembles participating in region and area music festivals, and well over 100 ensembles participating in our state festivals at the high school and middle school level in both concert and jazz. Additionally, all of the great performances and music experiences gained from the many district, region and all state honor ensembles that are provided throughout our state. YOU are the driving force behind all of these great opportunities for your students. That is pretty cool.
You are to be commended for your dedication to your students, parent organizations, and schools in doing all that you can to provide a quality music experience in your classroom every day. Now, summer is upon us, don’t run out the door just yet. There are a few things you can do to make your 2016-17 school year start-up a little less stressful
· Clean out those lockers
· Clean your desk off
· Clean out your desk drawers
· Write a thank you note to your office staff
· Write a thank you note to your custodial staff
· Get those instruments to the repair shop
· Tighten those music stands up so they don’t wobble
· Clean up those school instruments that are not going to the shop…oil the valves, lube the slides, clean the mouthpiece, oil the keys…all the stuff you will be thankful for in the fall…that you are doing now.
· Ask your principal, one more time, if there are any funds left so you can buy something. Then buy something…
Now you can take that break. You deserve it and you need it. The fall semester will be here very soon. I am excited to see and hear the amazing results you achieve with your students in the 2017-18 school year. Know that we are here to assist you in any way possible; please do not hesitate to ask. Enjoy the ride.

ACE NEWS FROM PRESIDENT DARIN SHRYOCK
Greetings Arizona Choral Educators:
Well, it's finally here...my last note. There is no possible way to thank you for the passion, expertise and dedication you share so freely with the students of Arizona. I hope that, at this time of year, you get some much-needed love from your students. I hope your seniors understand how better armed they are to face the world because of the experiences they had in your classrooms and concert halls. The tradition at Marcos is that each senior is invited to write a letter of thanks and farewell to the choir. As they come up to sing the senior dedication song at graduation, they hand me their letter and take their place on the risers for the last time. It's a "turning of the page" for them, providing the opportunity to recognize that this chapter is over, and while they have much to remember, it's time to turn their attention to the future.
As we turn to the future, my hope is that you will continue to communicate with the ACE board about issues of concern as well as celebrations you encounter throughout the year. The elephant in the room is the required solos for Regionals and All-State. The PDFs are done as well as the first cut of the accompaniment tracks. Once edited, these materials will be available on the ACE website. I'll do an email blast as soon as that happens.
As I close this final message, I will remind of 3 things... if you owe it, pay it; if you're asked, share it; and if the opportunity to serve comes to you, DO IT :)
I have such great respect for you and look forward to our next chapter together.
Darin
