Google Power Searcher part 2
filtering images
As you or your students research information or images for any presentations, it is a great idea to learn how to filter out unnecessary images from your search results. As last week, using the Google Operators is a one way to accomplish this task. There are 2 easy ways to filter images for optimal results.
option 1
Top level domain searches
As you learned in part 1, using a top level domain search will yield certain types of results. A top level domain is how the website is categorized most notably by the ending portion of a web address such as .com (commercial), .edu (education), and so on. The same is true when searching for images. This is incredibly useful when students are searching for information for a report, presentation, or other technology activity..
You can see a difference in the search results yielded. This is a useful way to find what you need and eliminate unwanted images or information. Below are the different top level domains you can use in your research to find images.
option 2
search tools within image search
When you are in Google images, you find an extra button to the right label "search tools." This will expose a new menu to filter images in certain ways.
search tools -> Usage rights
Teaching your students to use only images that are allowed by law to be used by others is by far the most important process. This is not just a skill for school but a habit to be build for their life. Ensuring this small step can guarantee that they will be honest in the future with copyrighted material. This tool, then, filters images depending on copyright usage.
