Nutritional Needs of Children
Ages 6-12
Nutrition
During the elementary school years, children grow at a consistent rate and develop food habits that they will have their entire lives. Parent should set good examples and encourage children to try new foods. Parents should not use food as a punishment or reward.
No matter what age 6-12, children need the same types of food. They should eat foods from all the food groups and children over 9 need a third serving of milk each day. The amount of food a child consumes depends on his or her growth rate and physical activity. As children grow older the amount of food and the variety will gradually change. This age group may consume as little as 1,200 calories a day or up to 2,200 calories a day depending on what age they are.
