A Letter from the President
Dear FWQG Friends,
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! It always brings up very wonderful memories of my maternal grandmother Marie Roy. My grandmother bestowed upon me her love of baking and quilting. I don’t remember her ever having an idle moment. I did not appreciate her quilting skills as much when she was alive as I do now. Grandma would have loved the advent of rotary cutters and all the tools we have now. I remember her cutting out cardboard templates with scissors. Then cut out the pieces with scissors as well. Everything was hand pieced and hand quilted. I also remember her quilting frame hung from the ceiling. She has
been gone for over 40 years but the memories as still strong.
I hope everyone in your families is well and getting ready for the coming holiday season. I know for some the season is very hard. I wish for everyone to reach and help them whenever possible. After all, this is the season of giving and giving thanks.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Karen

Program Report
Molly Risewick
I cannot believe we are already at mid-November! If you were not able to join us for JoLynn O’Neil’s workshop and you are curious about paper piecing or you already enjoy paper piecing, I have to tell you that you missed a great workshop. We had a lot of fun, learned a lot and ended up with some very cool looking blocks. I need to finish my block so that I can show it off during show and tell!
This month we will have Suzanne DiCarlo coming to talk to us about the Quilts of Valor Foundation. Remember to bring any QOV that you have made, or that you have a finished top for, to share with us during the show and tell portion of our meeting.
Dorene and I are getting excited, as we get ready for our December meeting. We have a few fun things in store that we hope you will enjoy. Please remember that it will be a potluck dinner, so get thinking about what you might want to bring that evening. We will also do an ornament exchange, so please bring or make one for the swap. In addition, we are going to do an optional Christmas tree block swap…. Except it isn’t really a swap. If you would like to bring a 10.5” (10” finished) Christmas tree block, you will turn it in and put your name on a ticket. Before the end of the evening, we will draw one ticket, and that person will go home with all of the Christmas tree blocks with which they can make a quilt, table runners or some wall hangings. We hope you will participate and we are looking forward to seeing what you come up with. (Thank you Julie Hedden for the suggestion!!)
Finally, the sign-up sheets will be out for the January and March workshop. In January, Winnie Fleming is returning and there is some prep work that needs to be done prior to her workshop. If you have been looking forward to her return, please make sure you get signed up so that I can send you the supply list and instructions for what you need to come to class having done in order to get the most out of it.

RETREAT 2020
The dates of our retreat for 2020 are April 16 – 19. We will go to the Compass Centre in Mount Calm, just over an hour’s drive from Fort Worth. All you have to bring with you when you go to the Compass Centre is things to wear and things to sew. You don’t have to bring linens, you won’t need to bring bags of groceries, and you won’t have to take time away from sewing to prepare a meal. The cost of the retreat is $295 for three nights and $196 for two nights. You may pay with cash, check, or credit card. You may pay over the course of several months or all in one fell swoop—your choice. Please see Grace Stroud if you’d like to join us at the 2020 retreat.
If finances are a concern, see the note in the Bev Ramsey Fund section.

ROGUES:
TIGHT KNOTS BEE
BEV RAMSEY FUND
Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, teacher, and friend. We lost her way too early. The fund was set up to help those in need to be able to enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops. We should be able to send 2 people to retreat this year. Application forms will be available at the November and December meetings or by sending an email request to Karen Holder. Applications should be in no later than the end of January. The applications may be given to a member of the board or to Grace Stroud.
NICU QUILTS
Information from JPS for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Quilts
We received a letter recently introducing us to Mitzi Vanderark, the new coordinator of volunteers at JPS. They love the quilts we send them. They included some criteria for us to follow.
For the baby blankets:
Receiving – 36” x 36”
Preemie – 18” x 18” (NO flannel)
Baby – 36” x 36”, or 36”-38” by 40”-42”
No larger than 38” x 42” but preferred size is 36” x 36”
Fleece and flannel are NOT accepted in the ICU, 100% cotton only for front and back.
All quilts should be washed after piecing and before donation to JPS.
NICU Quilts
Karen Holder
Report from the home front – Karen Holder’s home, that is.
After a working/eating/laughing session, we discovered a need for more finished NICU quilts.
If you can find a little time, about 2 yards of fabric and some batting, your efforts in putting it together will be greatly appreciated. Try out a new quilting technique or put on seasonal music and sew away.
Your donation of time, energy, goods and dedication = a gift of love to JPS NICU!
LOVIES QUILTS
A big thanks to all who donate fabric and time for the lovies. These are greatly needed and appreciated by the NICU at Harris downtown and the parents of the premies.
It helps to give the scent of the mothers to the babies and the scent of the babies to the mothers. We still need some cotton fabrics that read solid in red, green, blue and yellow.
Thank you,
Beverly Peterson
