Language Arts Focus
Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed winter break! As we get back into the school routine, we will integrate the season of winter into language arts by reading winter books, discussing favorite winter activities, and noticing seasonal changes.
Guided reading groups are tiered and based on reading ability. This small group opportunity provides individualized instruction based on academic needs. Skills we work on during groups include:
Phonics skills
Building CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words
Rhyming word families
Sounding out words
Applying letter/sound and word knowledge to reading and writing
Sight words
Comprehension (retelling, story elements, sequencing, inferencing)
Text features (bold print, punctuation, quotations marks, labels…)
Fluency
Please have children read little books at home and return them the next day. Your child’s book needs to be available for reading groups. Remember to discuss the books after reading them by asking questions and retelling the story.
Math Focus
Addition
Subtraction
We will use tools such as part, part, whole mats, number lines, manipulatives, and other math materials to help students develop the skills of putting together and taking away. They will manipulate tools to solve and explain mathematical problems. We will use pictures, equations, and oral explanations to help explain our mathematical reasoning.
