What's New With Dual Credit?
Entering into the 2019-2020 school year, dual credit in RISD is exploding!!!! There has been huge growth in dual core courses at RHS and LHHS, health science courses at all four high schools and we have two new Pathways in Technology Early College High Schools (PTECH) academies opening at Lake Highlands and Pearce High Schools. All of this growth is increasing the opportunities for our students to graduate from high school with not only college hours but with associate degrees or certificates for employment immediately after high school. It is an exciting time for dual credit in RISD!!!!!
One of the great things about our students taking dual credit courses and earning college credit is that it also provides them with the chance to earn quality points that can be used in calculating their high school GPA. Currently our juniors and seniors have the opportunity to earn 5 quality points towards their GPA upon successful completion of a dual credit course. Due to changes made in GPA policies, our freshman and sophomores now have the opportunity to earn 10 quality points towards their GPA upon successful completion of their dual credit course. Since students are earning quality points for taking dual credit courses, it was important that we reexamined when we were offering dual credit in our high school classes and have it align to the length of the college semester. For example, if a student is taking a one semester college level course, we needed to have the course being taught for one semester at the high school. This allows our students to earn their quality points for the same number of semesters at the high school as they are at the college.
Thanks to your hard work, more and more students are understanding the significance in taking dual credit course while in high school. We know that with each passing year, we will see more and more dual credit being added to our high schools and this will only help our students!
Dual Credit Teacher Stipend Update
RISD is one of only a few districts in the metroplex who offers their dual credit teachers, who are the official teacher of record for instruction and grades, a stipend for teaching college level courses. Due to the explosion we are experiencing this year in dual credit enrollment, we are reevaluating our dual credit stipend structure. We have not finalized what this will look like but, I can let you know that we are investigating the option of providing stipends based on student enrollment numbers vs. the number of period a course is taught.
Stand by and more information will be coming your way shortly……….
