Spring 2016: REED Video Contests
And the winners are.......
We are pleased to announce the winners of the 3rd Annual REED video contests!
These contests have brought home 21st century learning to classrooms across the REED district. In a fun, student-centered learning environment, students have given time to contemplate personal and social responsibility. In order to do so, they used skills such as planning, critical thinking and working in groups as they developed their videos. Most of all, their creativity has been given wings, while learning English. A winning combination for all the participants!
The book trailer contests have motivated students to read for pleasure, while enticing others to pick up a book as well. This contest has replaced the “boring book report" and incorporated the experience of extensive reading into a fun project in classrooms across the country. This contest has provided one creative way of rejuvenating the extensive reading program in a fun, relevant, way, while authentically addressing all of our curriculum goals: reading, writing, speaking and editing!
Looking ahead to next year, we plan to add a newspaper category. Your class will create an on-line school newspaper on a platform similar to this one! Look for more information about this over the summer.
I would like to congratulate every class and teacher that participated in this contest. Each entry shows a development of theme and application of concept. The judges were impressed over and over again with the creativity and striving for professionalism that the entries exhibited. In my eyes, you are all winners!
I feel like we have arrived at the virtual evening of the Oscars!
This year, the subjects of the video contests were:
Identity, Diversity and Acceptance: Drama: JHS
Volunteering in the Community: Documentary: HS
Book Trailers: JHS and HS
You can visit the site, which includes instructions, rubrics and entries for all of the contests.
It's been a great pleasure coordinating this project!

A few words from our Inspector
Dear English Coordinators, Teachers and Students,
I am so pleased and excited for this REED Newsletter about our video contests. Seeing the wonderful creativity which is inspired by teachers and inspiring by students is a pride and joy. I want to congratulate ALL of the schools who participated and hope that their participation will enthuse other schools to take the plunge and have fun in the English classroom with reading!
Especially, I would like to express my gratitude to Melissa Weglein for her steadfastness, professionalism and devotion to these programs. Without her, there wouldn’t be this level of creation or logistics. A special thanks to Sandra Keren, who deals with the whole technical side of the site and contests, and to all of my amazing counselors for making this wonderful program happen.
It is my hope that all of our schools will participate next year - at least one class per school.
Wishing you all a wonderful Spring Holiday!
All the best,
Judie Segal
