STILLSON SPIRIT
October 2018 Newsletter
Dear Stillson Families:
Our 3 Be’s (Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible) were taught to our students with our annual September kick-off and we have posters throughout the building. It helps us to keep a positive school culture and environment by reducing incidents of problem behavior and providing maximum academic time.
We have also started our school-wide 3 Be’s positive reward system. All staff members who observe students following the 3 Be’s will give those students a blue ticket. All students should be receiving tickets for demonstrating good behavior. Students can earn tickets in all areas of the school (classroom, lunchroom, playground, etc.) and from all staff members. Research tells us that positive reinforcement is one of the best ways to not only change poor behavior, but also to maintain appropriate behavior.
We are also working collaboratively to meet the needs of our students academically. We will be starting our school-wide Stinger Time this month. We continue to focus on the area of literacy. Through progress monitoring, professional development, providing interventions and enrichment, and studying data, students will show increased achievement in reading. It is so important to have the skills to read and we want all children to be reading at home every night.
October 15 and 16 marks our conference time from 3:00-7:00 p.m. There will be a 15-minute conference with your child’s teacher to discuss academic progress. Conference scheduling will be online for your convenience. Lifetouch will also be here on both nights for school pictures. You should have received the Lifetouch information, along with conference information, in your child’s folder.
Thank you for your support of Stillson and your willingness to make our school the best that it can be. It is wonderful to see many of you volunteering as classroom helpers or field trip chaperones. Also, please consider attending a PTO meeting and join in the fun with our awesome PTO Board as they plan and organize events throughout the year to support our students and staff.
We look forward to working together with you throughout the school year. If you have questions, suggestions, feedback or concerns, please feel free to contact any staff member or myself.
Sincerely yours in Stillson success,
Mrs. Carol Wilczek

3Be Kick Off
Ready~ Set~ Go!
Stillson students are revved up and ready to follow the 3Be’s (Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible). We started the year with a spectacular “3Be Kick Off”. Students were taught the behavior expectations for all areas in Stillson School (i.e. playground, lunchroom, hallways, bathrooms). A special thanks to our paraprofessionals for doing a phenomenal job with this “3Be Kick Off”! Next we topped it off with a 3Be all school assembly lead by Mrs. Wilczek. Teachers are currently following up with students by reteaching any expectations as needed. The students are ready and the 3Be race is on!!
We’ve also had several “3Be Bees” turned in from home telling us about all the ways students and parents have shown exemplary behavior in the community. We have all the bees displayed on our beehive at Stillson School! More to come on this in our next newsletter.

News from Nurse Kerrie:
Welcome back to a new year!
This is the time of year we tend to see an increase in illnesses in
our student population. We would like to remind parents and guardians the guidelines the
CFAUSD school nurses follow in regards to keeping your child home if they are not feeling well.
-Temperatures over 100.8 degrees. Students need to be fever-free for 24 hours without the
use of medicine before they can return to school.
-Vomiting and diarrhea in the last 24 hours: if the vomiting and diarrhea happen more than
once that day or they are associated with fever, your child must stay home from school.
-An unexplained rash: anytime a rash is associated with fever, the student may not come to
school until fever is gone for 24 hours without medications. Sometimes a rash is a sign of
a contagious disease such as chickenpox. Sometimes, rashes are not contagious, but are
uncomfortable and itchy from contact with something the child is allergic to.
-Red or crusty eye lids or drainage from eyes: are often symptoms of conjunctivitis, also
known as pink eye. Not all pin-eye is contagious. However, until we know for sure, we
must have a note from the doctor stating the condition is not contagious, or until the
redness and drainage are completely gone, your child must stay at home. Students with
pink-eye that requires antibiotics may return after 24 hours after starting them.
-Headache, cough, sore throat, or congestion severe enough to interfere with attention to
school work are recommended to stay home from school
-Flare ups from asthma, that would make it difficult to work at school
Please keep the health office informed when your child has been diagnosed with a contagious
illness and/or has not been feeling well.
PHYSICIAN’S NOTE FOR LIMITATIONS/RESTRICTIONS: Please remember that if
your child has any limitations or restrictions to participate in gym or recess due to illness or
injury, a physician’s note is required. If an end date is not indicated on the initial note, we will
require a note when restrictions are lifted. This is to ensure the safety and health of your student.
CLOTHING: The health office is in need of children’s clothing, especially pants, sizes 5-8,
both boys and girls. We are also looking for gently worn tennis shoes to have available for
students if they forget to bring in their own shoes. If you have any you can donate, please send
them in to the health office. Thank you.
VISION SCREENING: Vision screening will be done at the elementary schools the end of
September-beginning of October. This year the Lion’s Club will be assisting and screening all
grade levels. Screening will be done with a Spot vision screener. This device looks like a
camera. The camera takes a picture of your child’s eyes and detect certain vision problems
including far-sightedness, near-sightedness, blurry vision, and astigmatism. Screening dates are:
October 2nd—Stillson
October 3rd—Jim Falls
October 4th—Hillcrest
October 5th—Southview
October 8th—Halmstad
October 9/10—Parkview

Reminder
· First bell is 7:45 AM, 2nd bell is 7:48. If a student comes to school after 7:48 he/she will be counted as tardy.
· Parents are expected to call the office to report any absence by 8:30 AM, or a phone call from the automated phone system will be sent questioning the absence.
· If a child needs to ride a different bus after school, the parent must complete a bus deviation form to be given to the office or bus company.
· We appreciate your support in helping us eliminate interruptions in your child(ren)’s learning experience by not making last minute phone calls regarding changes in end of day transportation.

Important
If your child will not be at school, please call the school office, 715-726-2412, regarding your child’s absence. We appreciate you letting the classroom teacher know your child will be out (via email or note), but also let the office know, as many times classroom teachers will not have time to check their emails prior to school starting.
