Atzi Ibarra, an 8th grader at De Anza Academy of Technology and the Arts who says she doesn’t know why she has been winning awards since grade school, won another one at the February 13, 2019, meeting of the East Ventura Optimist Club. She was chosen as Student of the Month.
Principal Hector Guerrero said the school considers the award a major one for its students, and the entire staff is asked to submit names for the award and vote on the choice.
Guerrero said he was talking to Atzi on the way to the meeting, and she told him that she doesn’t understand why she has consistently been winning awards throughout her school years.
Before giving his own answer at the meeting, he offered a quotation from a DATA teacher who told him once, “I don’t have any kids, but if I did, I’d want them to be exactly like you.”
Atzi is always ready to help others and makes her family, school and community better for being here, Guerrero said.
Counselor, Basilio Gonzales, in his second year as a DATA counselor, called Atzi “very genuine.” He also called Atzi a “role model for our students and community.” Mr. Gonzales continued by stating that Atzi was always “first to volunteer and help other students out”.
She won first place in Migrant Speech and Debate for 8th grade.
In seventh grade she won the DATA Ricardo Ramirez award, which is named in honor of a De Anza student who passed away in 2006. The award recognizes two students for their kindness, respect and positivity.
Optimist Dave Erickson, who has been in charge of the Student of the Month award for at least 20 years, gave Atzi a certificate describing her as: thoughtful, kind, and driven – the words chosen by the school for the award. She also received a $50 gift card from Barnes & Noble.
Atzi plans to attend Ventura High School and then UCLA. She said she hopes to become a pediatrician or a therapist.
She thanked the club for the award and thanked her mother “the person I look up to the most”; said she’s “very grateful for having such a supporting school, teachers and staff”; and she praised her friends who are always supporting.
Atzi said she’s a member of the DATA choir and that choir is her favorite class.
Erickson also praised Atzi’s family and the DATA staff for helping Atzi and the other students
The East Ventura Optimist Club is part of Optimist International, which emphasizes activities and programs to help youths. Its major fund-raising activity each year is the Ventura Seaside Basketball Tournament, scheduled this year for April 27 and 28. In most years, the tournament fills most of the gyms in the Ventura Unified School District and sometimes spills into other communities.
