General News! Week of May 15th- 19th
Happy Last Monday!
Well, the end is definitely in sight! We have a full week ahead, and hope that everyone is still in school mode, at least until Wednesday...We would like to take a moment to thank you for all the help and support we have had this year, it is greatly appreciated. Middle School is an experience that we all go though and hopefully learn from these experiences.
We had a great turn out for our 8th grade dance...it is always so nice to see everyone dressed up and having a good time. Our dance committee outdid themselves this year, and the transformation of our rotunda into a flashback from the "Great Gatsby" era was amazing! Thanks for all the hard work! We hope those that joined us had an enjoyable evening.
Tonight is Honors Night for SMMS grades 6-8, and I have received a few e-mails concerning awards...to the best of our understanding, students who will be receiving an award tonight have already brought home an invitation. We will be holding another awards ceremony on Friday morning just for our team, so hopefully if you have not received an invitation your student will receive recognition for their achievements then.
This Thursday, May 18th, the eighth grade will be having a field day from 8:00-12:30. Students are asked to dress appropriately for a full day outside, but also take into consideration our school dress code will still be in effect. (i.e., not short shorts, tank tops, etc...)We need parent volunteers to cook hot dogs and/or help with a field day stations.
Parents who would like to volunteer will need to be here by 7:30 am to watch a short video and sign a waiver. Please contact Ms. Waxman , if you would be interested in helping with this. We would also any appreciate donations of small bottles of water to keep us hydrated though out the day.

This Week In Language Arts:
This week we will be going through the portfolios of student work that we have been collecting all year...hopefully these will make it home to you! Students will be asked to reflect on the novels and classroom activities we have done, homework assignments, etc... Our goal is to determine what worked, what didn't, and why. They will also be asked to reflect on their personal efforts and progress throughout the school year. Their final task will be to offer some personal survival advice to our upcoming 8th graders!
I hope that you will continue to encourage a variety of reading and writing practice mixed in with the usual summer fun...we want to keep that lexile growth in place for a successful high school experience!
