Evergreen Community Update

Our Mission
Principal's Message
Hello EMS Community,
I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing weekend. It's hard to believe that winter break is just around the corner. It's that time in the school year where the holidays are here and students start to get a little antsy as they know time off is approaching. For many reasons, middle schools often see a spike in behavioral incidents around this time but things have been pretty calm here at EMS.
Our annual Canned Food Drive kicked off yesterday and students have already begun to bring in their non-perishable food items as well as donations. Students have challenged themselves and chosen their own reward system for the amount of cans they bring in by December 20th. I'm not sure I'm digging their ideas but I'll go along with it I guess. If they reach their 4,000 can goal, they came up with the NON-BRILLIANT idea that I have to spend a school-day in January on roller skates. Not cool!!! If they reach their 6,000 can goal, Mr. Harrington and Mr. Yabu (our amazing leadership teachers) have to get their legs waxed in front of the entire student body during a January assembly. Now that's more like it!! However, if they reach their 7,000 can goal, two chosen students get to shave off my beard in front of the student body at an assembly in January. Needless to say, I might be hiding a few cans as they come in if they prove to be getting close to that goal.
Either way, I'm excited that our students are so willing to serve and help out members of our Evergreen community.
Below are a few pictures and more information about the current happenings around Evergreen.
Have a great week!

Are you interested in learning about Engineering and Health Sciences?
Glencoe High School is teaming with Evergreen Middle School to provide students an opportunity to participate in a 3-week, after school program. All sessions are taught by Glencoe teachers with support from Glencoe students. During the three week program, you will be working in a hands-on session to learn about these career opportunities available when you are a Glencoe student.
Students will ride a bus from Evergreen to Glencoe for the club. The activity bus will be available for students to get home after each session.

"Screen Time" Survey Results
On Thursday, November 7th, our EMS staff and students participated in "Workshop Day.' The theme was centered around "Screen Time" where the entire school day was centered around social media, screen time, and positive ways to spend their time other than on electronics. During the kickoff assembly, we provided students with research based information about social media and the positive and negative affects of it.
We also created a "Screen Time/Electronics" survey to find more our about our students and their habits. Here are a few of the results:
- 84.4% of EMS currently have a cell phone.
- 51.9% of EMS students have a specific time each night to be off of their cell phone but 33% of the 51.9% report that they get back on their phones when their parent(s) go to bed.
- 54.4% of EMS students have a specific bed time each night.
- 76.6% of EMS students have Snapchat.
- 72.9% of EMS students have Instagram.
- 19% of EMS students have Facebook.
- 25.4% of EMS students spend most of their time on Youtube while on their phone.
- 56.7% of EMS students report that they only get between 4-5 hours of sleep each night.
- 59% of EMS students report that they feel they are addicted to technology.
What we are asking of parents is that they monitor their student's screen time, particularly social media as well as ensuring that they are going to bed at a reasonable hour. Many of them are admitting that they get into bed but once parents fall asleep, they stay up and get right back onto their phones.

WEEKLY ATTENDANCE PERCENTAGES
When you look at attendance percentages, whether it is a school or individual, here is how it compares if you received a grade for attendance.
- >95%=A
- 93%-95%=B
- 91%-93%=C
- 90%-91%=D
- <90 =F (Chronically absent)
So looking below at last week's attendance, we didn't meet our goal any of the five school days. Our goal is to reach the A level each day of each week. When students are here, it makes everything run more smoothly.
