6th Grade Advanced Math
This week the students learned about the properties of a direct proportion. They completed several activities that required them to determine whether situations were proportional or not. This concept can sometimes be difficult for students, so we spent most of the week practicing this skill. Next week the students will be introduced to the terms: tax, tip, mark up/mark down, gratuity, percent increase/percent decrease, commission, profit, margin, and discount. They will work on finding sales tax, the discount of total purchases, and much more. They will also be introduced to the Real World Experience project for unit 3.

The students finished their automatons on Tuesday. They worked on writing a paragraph to describe the scene of their automaton and the animated action of the character. Below is a link to The Goodrich Way blog to read more about the activity and to see videos of their creations.
On Thursday, the students spent time reflecting and assessing their work on their automatons. Today I gave them some information on the history of the 1930's, since the novel, The Invention of Hugo Cabret takes place during that time period. We will begin reading the story next week.

The students have been hard at work creating their Rube Goldberg machines. It has been a challenging task for the students, but they are doing a great job persevering through trial and error moments. I am hoping they finish up the machines next week and spend some time reflecting on their work.
