Clarkville Te Kura ki Waimātao

Kia ora koutou.

It seems like we’ve had Crowded House’s ‘Four seasons in one day’ with snow followed by warm sunny days! Overall though, we have the sense that Spring is here!

Te Wiki o te reo Māori

Next week is Te Wiki o te reo Māori. We are committed to learning te reo in teams every week while we’re at school, but it’s great to celebrate our reo with all kiwis during this week. On Wednesday September 14 we are running fun Te Reo games in Buddy Groups across the school. This will run as a circuit of four 20 minute games from 9:15 until 10:50am. We invite parents to school at this time, to observe or join in with the games, and we also welcome you to stay and enjoy morning tea with us.

We have been fortunate to have Whaea Su Brown as a te reo teacher at school. This year she has been working with both staff and students to help us to embed te reo in our classrooms. Some topics we have covered are colours, weather, emotions and location. With each topic we learn key kupu (words) and how to communicate with these in full sentences. We are also learning how language can be a window into culture. We unpack words such as pukukino for grumpy, which comes from badly behaved (kino) stomach (puku), and manaakitanga, to care for others, which comes from building up (aki) the mana of others.

Board of Trustees

On Wednesday evening we had 13 people around the table for an extraordinary Board meeting of new and outgoing board members. We are fortunate to have the experience of our two remaining board members, and three new enthusiastic members to govern the school through the next three years.

This term all children are creating their own interpretations of the school’s cultural narrative. On Monday 26 September (Week 10) we will be holding an open afternoon for students to share their presentations with the community.

The Year 7&8 KBS Technology centre held a Scratch competition for students across Canterbury. Congratulations to our Year 7 Scratch team comprising of Oskar Ansley, Ted Jiang and Matt Pritchard, that came third in the competition.

Save our Sizzles!

Sausage Sizzle Coordinator - urgently needed
Been thinking lately you’d like to be a more active member of our school community? We are looking for someone (or grab a friend and job share!) to take over the coordination of the monthly sausage sizzles. Please get in touch with the PTA if you think this is something you’d like to take on for the school. We don’t want to have to stop the sizzles as the kids love them, and it’s a great way to help support your school.

Next PTA Meeting

Tuesday the 20th of September in the staffroom. All welcome

Thanks, Kristy and Nic

Big picture

Sport update, Term 3

Term 3 has been busy with sports here are Clarkville. Our year 7/8 Volley ball has been playing Monday evenings since the start of term and have been developing lots of new skills.

Our year 3/4 hockey team travelled to Selwyn house for a hockey tournament last week. The build-up was on a local turf and for some, consisted of a crash course in the game of hockey and its skills. They all took to the game amazingly. There was a real mix of experience, most of them playing for the first time. The games were fast, fun and full of action. Lots of cheering and chanting from the Selwyn house and Clarkville crowd added to the excitement. The Clarkville team was amazing, they showed some real courage and skill and they never gave up. They tackled their hearts out and scored some great goals. They won their games and represented Clarkville school with great sportsmanship.
