Third Grade Cardinal Chronicle

Room 23 with Ms. Grubbs

We have had a great week in 3rd grade!

We have watched caterpillars go into their J and form their chrysalis, watched the chrysalis transform from green to brown to transparent, and watch the butterfly hatch out of its chrysalis, dry its wings and begin to fly!! We then released several butterflies out into nature! It was truly amazing!!

RED FOLDERS: The first two pockets of the red folder are yours to clean out!! Most kids have chose to label these 2 pockets--Keep at Home and Return to School. PLEASE do not clean out the other pockets in their folders!!! Most papers in the back of the folder are resources we need for learning or things we are continuing to use in class. Thank you!

As many of you have noticed, we began exploring Seesaw Friday. :) This is going to be your child's portfolio of what they are doing in class. I apologize that videos or pictures might not have seemed educational, but per our learning of technology, we are suppose to give kids a chance to explore, as I do not know all their is to know about this app!

I did ask them to record or take a picture and provide a caption or recording of what they were doing in Math Workshop that day. Some kids did this, others did not. :) There is a blocker for me to approve what is posted, I will just have to see how this goes.... live and learn!

Your child might have come home and told you I was out Friday afternoon. Well, I had been nursing a tooth ache since Tuesday. Needless to say, it wasn't getting better. By lunch Friday, I couldn't take the pain and went to my dentist. I then ended up at the endocrinologist office having a root canal! UGH--- It was horrible. So I apologize you are just now receiving the newsletter... that is my excuse. :) I hope you had a better weekend than me!

Flyers for the DQ Fund Raiser Night went home this week. You do not have to have the flyer to participate on Monday from 4-9. Hope to see you there!

Fall Conferences

Parent/Teacher Conferences this year at TCE will continue to be Student Led Conferences! Student Led Conferences are taking place in places like Noblesville, Nebraska, and even New Zealand! This is a movement that is taking place in the world – not just at TCE! These conferences allow your child to be an important part by having them share their accomplishments and help create goals for the year. Of course, if time is needed to speak just as adults, this time can be set.

Teachers will be sending out directions on Friday, September 23rd for parents to sign up electronically for a conference date between Monday, October 3rd and Wednesday, October 19th. We can’t wait to celebrate your child’s learning with you!

House Keeping

If something pressing, like a last minute dismissal change, comes up during the day, please be sure to contact the office. The third grade team has prep in the morning. Since we are busy with the students during the day, we often wont have another chance to look at email until after dismissing students.

As part of our commitment to professionalism, we strive to respond to weekday emails within 24 hours and weekend emails before the end of the day on Monday. If this time period has passed and you feel your email may have been overlooked by mistake, please feel free to follow up.

NWEA

Students in grades K-6 just completed taking the beginning of the year Northwest Evaluation Association’s (NWEA) assessment. These tests determine your child’s instructional level and measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year in the areas of math and reading. Your child’s individual student report, reflecting this year’s beginning scores will go home next Friday.

Math

We will be reviewing the properties of addition and practicing fact families. We will be doing subtraction with regrouping up to 1,000. This sometimes can be more difficult because there are lots of steps involved. We encourage practicing a few problems each night at home.

We will be learning new fact fluency games and using our new math vocabulary in our discussions.

Reading

We have completed two novels already- Because of Winn Dixie and Frindle - both authors Andrew Clements and Kate DiCamillo are ones to keep at the top of your lists!!

We began reading Matilda by Ronald Dahl.

Miss Lukas will begin teaching our reading lesson Monday! She will be discussing the genre of Non fiction with Biographies. Kids will be researching, creating a timeline, discussing non fiction features, and sharing information they learned.

We will begin our reading groups as well.

Writing/Word Work/Spelling

We will continue to go from a big moment to a first small moment. We will discuss strong beginnings, word choice, and sequence of events.

Vocabulary- Test on Thursday Sept. 22nd

Spelling- A new word list will be coming home Monday--- Next test Thurs. Oct. 29th

September 30th: Grandparents' Day at TCE!

As you may already know, Grandparent’s Day is celebrated around the United States in the month of September. We would like to honor grandparents on Friday, September 30th by inviting them to TCE for a special Grandparent’s Day! The event will take place from 9:10-11:35, with each grade level hosting a specific time slot. During this special visit, the grandparents will get a chance to see your child’s classroom and do some memorable activities with your child. Below is the timeline for the days’ activities.

9:10-9:50 Kindergarten

9:35-10:15 3rd Grade

10:00-10:40 1st Grade

10:30-11:10 2nd Grade

10:55-11:35 4th Grade

As you can see there might be an open slot as you wait for another grade level. The PTO will be hosting a waiting room at TCE for that open time period. Refreshments will be served and student work will be on display. Due to the wonderful turn out, and the high number of students we have this year, we are requesting no visitors for lunch that day. Thank you for your understanding! We look forward to this special event!
