A Message From Garland ISD Superintendent Dr. Ricardo López

“For more than 100 years, Garland ISD has focused on providing an exceptional education while stretching our budgets to protect our taxpayers. This year, GISD is once again leading the state and the nation with our innovative Tax Rate Election that will be on the November 3rd ballot.

Unlike most TREs, ours could actually be called a Tax Reduction Election. If the TRE is approved by voters, our new property tax rate would be approximately $1.34 – a nearly .05¢ decrease from last year and a nearly .12¢ decrease from 2018-19. In fact, the tax rate would be the lowest our community has seen in six years.

The TRE will impact every student at each of our 72 schools and increase their opportunities while providing property tax rate relief for every business and homeowner.

Please take a moment to review this website to learn more about our TRE. Our goal is to make sure you have all the information you need to make an informed vote on November 3rd.”

Observe the Moon Night Student Challenge!

Big picture

On September 26th, the GISD Planetarium will kick the our first student and family virtual outreach program, NASA'S International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN).

Students and their family members can participate in two ways:

Level 1: Take a selfie with the moon on September 26, the official day of InOMN, and submit it through our tri-district planetarium website K12planetarium.org. Participants will receive a NASA "I Observed the Moon" Certificate.

Level 2: Take a selfie and complete three challenges (moon journal, lunar lander, and a moon myth) as an individual or as a family. GISD participants will enter to win a "small group" planetarium show in a socially distant environment.

NASA will present a virtual short program to the class with the most students who complete Level 2. Additionally, the winning school will host the exclusive NASA International Observe the Moon Night banner until winter break.

The deadline to submit photos/videos for the three challenges and the moon selfie is October 25th.
