Greetings MTE Community,
Greetings MTE Community,
There are so many things going on right now in the district; remote learning, planning for coming back in a hybrid format, assessment happening virtually, library changing from every week to just being held the 1st and 3rd weeks of the month, etc. So, I want to make sure that you all have an opportunity to meet with me and get your questions answered and your concerns expressed.
I am going to have monthly meetings where you all can come and find out information and share information with me that you feel I need to know. They will begin next week. There will be one day of meetings in English and another day where there is a Spanish interpreter available. If you are in need of an interpreter in a language other than Spanish, please contact the office and we will work with you to make that happen.
These meetings will take place in the morning and the evening. This is so that families have options. I know you all are busy and I am hoping this will help with creating accessibility for more families.
The meetings are happening on the following dates at the following times:

New Library Schedule
Library Zoom classes are presented live on the first and third weeks of the month, alternating with materials pick up. Students can access their zoom links for library classes from their Canvas or Seesaw accounts. Assignments will also be posted there every two weeks.
Thank you, readers, for putting holds on library books-- scores of books have been distributed to young readers this week. You can pick up library books along with other materials on Mondays in even weeks; the second and fourth weeks of the month (the same days as class supply pickups).
Please contact me if you have any questions or need recommendations for titles for your kids to read, or for you to read to your kids. If you need a special time to pick up books, please email me so I can make sure everything is ready.
Students are allowed 4 books at a time, but they may place holds for more than that. They may check out one book by an author at a time, then place a hold on the next book in the series. Return books when you come to get new books or email me for a special time to exchange books.
Some books may not actually be available or are in quarantine, so having more titles on hold helps guarantee readers can get up to 4 books. Please email me if you need help.
Thanks for helping your children get library books, helping keep library books clean and enjoyed, but mostly, thanks for reading to your children!

The Great Washington Shakeout!
International ShakeOut Day is always the third Thursday of October (this year: October 15).
As always, you can hold your #ShakeOut drill when and where you want. You can choose another date or several dates, and include people in multiple locations (home, work, or school), perhaps through video conferencing.
It's actually a good idea to practice earthquake safety in different situations each year, and ShakeOut Organizers are here to support you.

Partnership with M Radio Live
We would like to inform you of an exciting partnership between the Edmonds School District and M Radio Live. M Radio Live is a 24 hour online Spanish Language Radio station in Kirkland, Washington. This collaboration will allow us to stay connected with our 5,000 plus Latino/Latina families that speak Spanish, and also do live interviews to inform the community and allow for dialogue around critical topics. We will also be producing two shows a month along with youth in our district to create a virtual hands-on experience into the world of broadcasting.

Updated school district attendance policy and practice
Every absence, excused or unexcused, is a learning opportunity lost and can have significant impacts on a student’s success in school and life. A student who misses 10 percent or more of their school days, which can mean just two days a month, for any reason, is considered chronically absent. A student is considered truant if they miss five or more unexcused days in a month or 10 or more unexcused days in a year. Five or more unexcused days may lead to a conference with the school.
Attendance is critical to learning. Logging on meets the minimum requirement for attendance. Actively engaging meets the goal for learning. All students are expected to attend and actively engage in daily remote learning.
Reminders during COVID:
Please continue to report your student’s absence to the school office.
Absences will only be excused if they meet the State’s criteria for excused absences, including new reasons for excused absences during COVID-19.
Schools will begin to send daily automated calls beginning Monday October 19 for students that have not attended a scheduled class or engaged in remote learning daily. This will be the initial absence notification, the callout messages acknowledge that these absences can be adjusted by the teacher, should engagement for that day be established.
If you have questions or concerns about attendance, please reach out to Theresa Knowles Hopkins at (425) 431-3364.
Tips for good attendance during remote learning:
Establish a designated time for electronic devices to be turned in or shut down at a reasonable time the night prior.
Ensure school Chromebook or device used to log on to remote learning is charged the night prior.
Establish a morning routine that includes having breakfast and ready to be logged on
time for the first class.
LUNCH BUNCH!
Come have a fun social zoom with your favorite staff and friends.
Mrs. Nakkour and Ms. Kelly and staff will be joining you to play games, show and tell, watch cool science experiments, have fun and hang out Monday through Friday.
Special Guests Next Week:
Tuesday - Ms. Luangamath will talk about immigrating to the United States at age 8 and starting to learn English in 3rd Grade.
Time: 11:45 - 12:15
When: Monday - Friday
