Here is what's on top at Buena Vista! 11/13/2021
Note from the Principal
Good Afternoon Parents,
I hope you are all enjoying some extra time with your family during this long weekend. I know that I am definitely taking advantage of a little extra family time these 4 days. I know the school week felt short, but there are so many great things continuing to go on at Buena Vista Elementary.
Student Learning
I was able to be a guest teacher in Mrs. Stessel's class and work with 1st grade students as they brainstormed all of the things they were thankful for (family, friends, pets, and of course, recess). We then did a step-by-step art project where they were able to carefully trace, cut and glue their thankful list with an adorable turkey. There were many steps and they very patiently worked and completed each step by showing me their great listening skills.
I also had the pleasure of sitting in Mrs. Pacific 4th grade math lessons. Students were collaborating to organize mixed fractions and decimals on a number line. Quite a complicated task. That said, students were highly engaged and collaborative with their thinking. As they placed their tricky numbers on the number line they were able to clearly articulate their math thinking and quickly convert fractions and decimals back and forth to prove their place on the number line was correct. When there was disagreement on placement, the discourse back and forth between students was awesome to watch as they sorted out the correct answers. The high level of thinking and discussion was a delight to watch.
I had my second training meeting for our Upstanders Ambassadors this week. We have a group of 4th and 5th grade students who meet with me weekly to begin building our BV anti-bullying team. I am excited about this adding this new program for our Buena Vista Bulldogs. Many studies show that by addressing even the most subtle bullying behaviors early and teaching our students to embrace differences in each other that we can make huge difference in our school and community. The work continues, here is one resource that I refer to as I plan our weekly meetings: stopbullying.gov
WCEF's Read-a-Thon
We are deep into the second week of WCEF's Read-a-Thon to raise funds to support our specialist classes at the elementary schools. This includes our Art, Science and Music Specialists at school.
Please look below for how our Bulldogs can support what is coming from WCEF! I know that we just finished one fundraiser and are now diving into another. Back-to-back fundraisers was not our intention. Our goal is to focus on the reading that we love to do as we support WCEF. To help I have these incentives to get us all reading and logging our minutes:
- Teacher treat day if we get 75% of our students sign-up to log their minutes
Read to your stuffy/pajama day if we reach 50.000 minutes
Mrs. Gramlick will kiss a bulldog if we reach our $10,000 goal--a real slobbery Bulldog from what I hear......
Lunch recess dance party with the Bulldog if we reach 100,000 minutes
Top 5 earners can slime the principal in front of the whole school if we make $20,000 goal
So far at BV we have collectively read 19,547 minutes, raised $5,589 and have 132 participants!
I am sure you can help BV reach the goal of a pajama/stuffy party and having Mrs. Gramlick have to get those wet Bulldog kisses before the end of next week!! You can follow our leader board here!
A big shout out to Mrs. Fairholm (2), Mrs. Ong(3) and Mrs. Hare/Mrs. Bacci(TK/K) our three leading earning classrooms! I also want to shout out to Shahin M. (Grade 2) and Kristen M. (Grade 4) who have both read over 1,000 minutes already! Way to go!
