The Bulldog Banter
Meadowbrook's Weekly Newsletter- May 30, 2019
A Fond Farewell from Mrs. Zimmer
I would like to take this opportunty to say "thank you" for a wonderful eight years as Meadowbrook Principal. Working with your children has been a true blessing and every single one of them will always have a special place in my heart. The bond I have with not only the students, but you, the families, is what I will miss the most.
I am lucky to have this new opportunity in my career, and still being part of the district I look forward to watching all the students continue to learn and grow. Meadowbrook is a special school with awesome families, students and staff and I am proud to say that I was once a Bulldog and will always be a Bulldog! Thank you, Meadowbrook!

Summer Break Reading Bingo
Let’s Talk! with Mrs. VanAsten and Mrs. Heim, Speech-Language Pathologists
Can you believe we are nearly finished with May! Which means June is right around the corner...along with the end of the 2018-19 school year! How can it be?! As much as our students will miss coming to school each day, we know they are equally excited about having the summer to spend with friends and family. We are too! Take time this summer to engage your child in a variety of activities and adventures; go for a nature walk, visit a park, take a trip to the library, make play-dates with friends. Each and every one of these experiences serves as an opportunity to expand your child’s language and social skills. Ask questions, take turns, tell stories, problem solve - together! As you enjoy the summer with your child, you will also be deepening their well of knowledge. Every day is a chance for them to grow in character and intelligence. We wish every family at Meadowbrook Elementary a safe, fun, and relaxing summer! We look forward to seeing many familiar faces (along with some new ones!) in the fall.
As always, thank you for being an active participant in your child’s learning!
Warm regards,
Mrs. Katie VanAsten and Mrs. Heim

A note from your School Board Representative
From your School Board
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE BOARD
Please enjoy this article from outgoing Student Rep to the Board – Abbi Bender!
In a culture constantly motivated by change and innovation, the Howard-Suamico School District and Board of Education prove time and time again that they are unafraid of the fast-paced progress headed for the education system. With the help of a hardworking administrative team, the passionate and dedicated school board members take on big undertakings in adapting our district to better fit the needs of the 21st Century in stride.
For thirteen years, the Howard Suamico Board of Education has included the vital position of a non-voting student representative at each biweekly board meeting to be a direct link from the student body to board members. During the 2018/19 school year, I, Abbi Bender, was honored with the opportunity to fill this position. My term comes to an end on May 20, 2019 and I am incredibly proud to have been a part of such an innovative and passionate board that strives to better the education of all students, and ultimately improve the community as a whole.
The end of my term on the school board coincides with a lot of ends in my life. In a couple of short weeks, I will become a graduate from the Howard Suamico School District and end my time as a high school student. To me, it is easy to reflect on the major changes I have seen throughout my education; I have vivid memories of giving presentations on overhead projectors in kindergarten, the implementation of the first SMART Boards in my second grade class, and where classroom technologies are now, giving my peers and I the opportunity to create and learn from dynamic and interactive presentations on two screens and personal devices.
It is harder, however, to recognize some of the smaller changes developing overtime through dedicated conversations and meticulous planning. In November, the Board, as well as district administrators, participated in a book study on Ted Dintersmith’s What Schools Could Be. This study prompted challenging conversations on the innovation needed to improve public education and the direction of the district. By listening to and participating in this dialogue, I was able to observe the dedication and fearlessness the Howard-Suamico School District has when it comes to bringing positive change to their schools and community. I left those board meetings exhilarated by the discussions and unable to wait to share all the exciting topics (often prompting me to call my mom on my way home because a seven minute drive was too long of a wait).
Following these energizing meetings, I fulfilled my responsibility as the student representative by communicating with my peers about the discussions that took place at the board table. Despite technological advancements, classroom education has, for the most part, remained stagnant throughout the lifetimes of my peers and myself. While reporting out on ideas about “The Profile of a Graduate” and “Individualized Learning,” my peers became excited about the changes that will take place in their education throughout the coming years.
To my peers, and to myself, nothing is more energizing than knowing that positive change is coming, and the efforts are being led by a team of dedicated board members and district administrators who are clear about their intentions to influence our educational path in a way that will better prepare us for our ever-changing futures.

Preparing for Next School Year
Reading Olympics Celebrates 20 years!
The 2019-2020 Reading Olympics is right around the corner! Reading Olympics is an optional activity open to any 3rd or 4th grade student at Meadowbrook. Students who join agree to read 8 pre-selected books and meet at Meadowbrook on a scheduled morning from 8:00-8:30 to discuss a different book each week. The morning dates will be finalized soon. After discussing all 8 books, we hold three book challenges. At that time, we will divide into teams. Each team will be asked questions about the books and can answer as a group.
The list of books that you will need to read is included on the Meadowbrook Library webpage. You need to read all eight of the books to qualify for a team. Upon completing each book, you will also need to complete a page in your Reading Olympics Journal. Please print a journal page for each book. The journal will help you log your reading and assist you in recalling the details of all the books that you read when it comes time for our discussions. This will be a good study guide to assist you in preparing for the book challenges we will have in December 2019.
We will officially begin our Reading Olympics book discussions in mid-September. If you would like to participate, please complete the participation agreement form found here by Friday, September 6 . All students who participate in this event by reading the books, completing the journal, attending the morning discussions, and competing in the challenges will receive a reading award and be entitled to attend the reading celebration at the end of the program.
We are very excited about this program and hope you consider participating. The books are available in print, eBook and/or audio format in our school library, as well as, Brown County Library. Books in the school library are on a first come, first serve basis. Because of this, we encourage you to begin reading the books as soon as possible, rather than waiting to read them the week before the scheduled discussion..
Please contact Mrs. Wick at 920.662.5091 or michwick@hssdschools.org if you have any questions about Reading Olympics.
Looking forward to reading and enjoying books together,
Mrs. Wick - Library/Technology Integration Specialist
Mrs. Huhtala - Literacy Specialist
