From Your District Leadership
May 20, 2021
Dear District Staff and Families,
Today marks the last day of the school year! We did it! I am so fortunate to have worked with such incredible professionals to bring high quality education to our district students. We stuck together and met this past 14 months with grace, resilience and a love for learning. It is the best way to end my time here.
Thank you again to everyone that stepped up and worked hard to bring us to a successful ending to one of the most challenging years of my career.
Dr. Karen Gaborik, Superintendent
Our 2021 graduates were able to complete this year with in-person graduations! If you weren’t able to attend or if you want to see joyful students, staff and families celebrate their accomplishments, we have those videos on the Districts YouTube channel.
HOOTBOARD (Submitting and viewing flyers)
We are excited to invite you to sign up for our new flyer website, Hootboard. Flyers for all types of community activities can be found on the district’s page within Hootboard. Nonprofits and government agencies can upload their flyer, our staff will approve it, and then families will have access to them immediately. No paper to track!
Nutrition Services is offering free summer meals for children 18 and younger. The child must be present to pick up the meal, but they can bring it home to eat. Some sites offer free meals starting as early as May 25th.
Are you aware of someone who needs access to resources available through our community? Our social services managers maintain this Community Resources information page and invite you to access it and share it with others.
BE SMART GUN SAFETY CAMPAIGN
Summertime is primetime for kids to have more unsupervised freedom. Please take a few minutes to go over gun safety with your family. The Be SMART campaign has many resources to help guide your discussion.
The school district has received three rounds of one-time Federal funding to support education through the pandemic and recovery afterwards. The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development (DEED) has created a survey for families and community members to provide feedback about what the state and school district priorities should be regarding how the funding is used.

SCHOOL START TIMES FOR 2021-2022 YEAR
Tuesday night, the Board of Education voted to adopt Scenario One for the 2021-2022 school start times. FNSBSD Transportation Department will continue to work on routing as student enrollment increases. Review of each school’s start time will be ongoing throughout the summer and start times may change from the scenario one graphic. District leadership will continue to work on this transition as well as while welcoming our new bus contractor Durham School Services to ensure a smooth start to the 2021-2022 school year. There will be more information coming to staff and families as they develop.
