Mr. Glover's Weekly Update
Happy Sunday, Raider families! We have officially completed the first half of the first trimester of the 2023-24 school year. With everything that goes on at a school campus on a daily basis, it seems appropriate that we recognize all of the hard work that is required to make sure that the day runs smoothly. One very essential and important group on our campus is our custodial team. It is imperative that we highlight this group for all of the wonderful work that they do to make sure that Black Mountain Middle School is the gem of the district.
Tomorrow is National Custodians Day and we would like to acknowledge and enthusiastically celebrate our extremely dedicated Custodial team for all of their hard work and diligence they exhibit when keeping our school clean and equipped. Each of us on campus understands the importance of the work that this team completes daily. Not only keeping the campus clean and maintained but also meeting the requests and demands that come along with keeping a campus like Black Mountain Middle School running so smoothly.
So for Custodians Day, please encourage your children to not only do their part in keeping the campus clean and managing their trash but to also take the time to personally thank these wonderful people for all of the work they do for our children and educators every day. Thank you, Mike, Tim, Kevin, Josie, and Ziad for keeping up looking great!!
New Traffic and Parking Program at BMMS
Please note that the parking lot will be closed in the morning and afternoon while the buses are completing their loading and drop off of students. Once the buses have exited the site, the parking lot will be opened to the public. Please refrain from parking in these areas. We will have two locations for student drop-off and pick-up throughout the day.
The EAST Parking Entrance will be open for two-way traffic in the morning for student drop-off. This will allow you to complete the circle around this portion of the parking lot and drop your child off next to the MPR.
Sunset Hills has graciously allowed us to continue to utilize their parking lot for morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up as well. They have asked that we respect that their parking spaces have been assigned to their educators. Please refrain from parking in these spaces.
You can continue to help us all with this by completing the following step during your drop-off;
Pull your car up as far as possible, before unloading
Keep your unloading time as short as possible (30 seconds max)
Parents, do not exit your vehicle as the driver.
If you need to unload your vehicle of items, please temporarily park in a space so as not to delay the unloading area.
Please do not unload your vehicle in front of the school or in the RED areas on Oviedo Street. Please use the entrance by the MPR instead.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Mid-Autumn Festival September 29th
Friday was the Mid-Autumn Festival, a celebration cherished across many Asian cultures, including China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The Mid-Autumn Festival embodies warmth, joy, and the cherished togetherness of family gatherings. BMMS Career Fair - December 8, 2023
WE NEED YOUR HELP! On December 8, 2023 during both lunches, Black Mountain will be hosting our annual Career Fair in our quad. Lunch time that day will be from 11:30am-1:00pm. Stations will be set up around our quad where students can learn information about a variety of careers. We are looking for volunteers to share information about their jobs with our Black Mountain students. Our goal is to give our students a wide experience of vocations and careers and spark interest in different career pathways. If you are interested in volunteering at a table, please complete the following survey ( https://forms.gle/tvKRzCLDuFGkRjSQ7).
If you have any questions about our Career Fair, please contact Jason Schafer, counselor at jschafer@powayusd.com
Join School Site Council
Our School Site Council (SSC) is a committee of certificated and classified staff, administrators, parents, and students whose purpose is to create our annual SPSA. This group meets several times during the year to review multiple measures of student progress and the allocation of capital resources, to best support instructional practices and intervention programs aligned with school-wide achievement goals. Please email Mr. Galaz lgalaz@powayusd.com if interested in joining.
Running Raiders - Friday Cross Country Meet
BMMS had its first home Cross County Meet for the Running Raiders and other middle school students on campus last Friday. There were over 400 students and spectators in attendance for this meet. There were 6 divisions of runners that participated in the day's event and we want to celebrate everyone who was able to compete. A huge thank you and congratulations to all of Running Raiders, coaches, volunteers and ASES team for organizing this event for everyone.
Hispanic Heritage Highlight
During our cultural celebrations of Hispanic Heritage Month, we at BMMS would like to honor a significant person or event that has shaped Hispanic & LatinX Heritage and/or history. We hope to inspire everyone to challenge themselves to learn something new this month in an effort to increase our knowledge and understanding of the Hispanic culture and community. This week's highlighted figure is, Sandra Cisneros.
Who Is Sandra Cisneros?
Sandra Cisneros was born on December 20, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois. Her novel The House on Mango Street, about a young Latina woman coming of age in Chicago, has sold more than two million copies. This is a shining piece of literary work that many of our students have read or will read in the near future. Cisneros has received numerous awards for her work, including the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship and the Texas Medal of the Arts. She lives in San Antonio, Texas. An American writer and poet. One of seven children and the only daughter, she has written extensively about the Latina experience in the United States. https://www.biography.com/authors-writers/sandra-cisneros
