NUMBER TALKS

Helping students build computational fluency

You can help students clarify their thinking in several ways:

Ask questions:

Who would like to share their thinking?

Who did it another way?

How many people solved it the same way as ____________?

Does anyone have any questions for ___________?

__________, can you tell us where you got that 5?

How did you figure it out?

What the first thing your eyes saw, or your brain did?

Describe what the student did and write down the process:

Is this [capturing __________'s strategy on the board, 16 x 25 = 4 (4 x 25)], how you thought about the problem?

Let's use an open array to think about _________'s way and how he/she broke apart the numbers (draw an array representing 16 x 25).
