Health Services Update
CCA Staff Meets with UI To discuss Training for an Overdose Reversal Medicine
Iowa public schools are now allowed to stock Narcan, also known as Naloxone, the drug that when administered may be able to reverse an overdose.
Ben Miskle, a professor in the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, is hosting educational sessions with district nurses in both the Iowa City and Clear Creek Amana school districts to discuss the potentially life-saving medication. He notes, opioid overdose deaths are increasing nationally, locally, and in adolescents.
CCA nursing staff met with the UI last week to discuss stocking Narcan in district buildings. They will help get the medicine and train CCA staff. Training will begin with the health office staff next week but will not apply for the medication until the board policy regarding this has final approval. Director of Health Services, Kathy Campbell anticipates having stock Narcan in CCA schools by the end of this calendar year.
Mental Health Matters: Brought to you by the CCA School Therapists
November 2 was International Stress Awareness Day.
We all know what it is like to feel stressed and being under a little pressure is a normal part of life. A small amount of stress can actually be useful; it can motivate you to take action and get tasks completed. But too much stress can cause negative effects such as a change in your mood and becoming overwhelmed by stress can lead to mental health problems or make existing problems worse. So today, we want to share some ideas of what you can do to manage your stress before it becomes a problem.
Stress relievers, or self-care, can help restore calm and serenity to the chaos. You don't have to invest a lot of time or thought into your self-care and stress relievers. If your stress is getting out of control and you need quick relief, try one of these tips.
Get active (start with a 15-minute walk)
Get enough sleep (How much sleep do you need?)
Eat a healthy diet (look into a rainbow food journal)
Try to avoid unhealthy habits (Is there one thing you would like to cut out?)
Meditate (learn what this means to you)
Laugh more (search a joke a day)
Plan your time (find balance in your calendar)
Connect with others (plan time to talk with someone you did not see last month)
Keep a journal (start with 7 minutes 1x/week)
Try yoga (try 5 minute chair yoga on YouTube)
Get musical or be creative (ask your child to play their favorite song)
After filling your cup, fill someone else's. In honor of the month of giving here is a helpful daily reminder to practice an attitude of gratitude. Mental health improves with acts of gratitude! The Brain Balance Center explains how gratitude can boost serotonin and produce dopamine which is our brain's pleasure chemical. Gratitude=Health.
