LG Expeditionary Thursday Update

May 2018

This was our final Expeditionary Thursday this year!

It is hard to believe that there are only 6 weeks remaining in this school year! Stay tuned for more information about June intensives coming up in a few weeks where students will have more opportunities to dive into fieldwork.

As a reminder, like January, eligibility for intensives is based on academic performance. Students must be at a competent grade (70) or above to participate in June intensives. Students at beginning mastery or below will receive targeted mastery support during this time. Please continue to check in with your child about their current levels of mastery.

6th grade travels to the AMNH

Students have studied Ancient Sumer and Ancient China through the 7 lenses of civilization. On this fieldwork, students applied what they have learned about the 7 lenses to the artifacts and exhibits they looked at. Students paid particular close attention to the different religions of the different cultures they investigate at the AMNH because the last unit of 6th grade SS is a student-driven research of World Religions.

7th grade visits the MET and Brooklyn Museum

Students in 7th grade Social Studies are entering their final case study of the year, answering the essential question, "What was the cost of American Expansion?"

As a case study kickoff, students visited an art museum to analyze a few different works of art that imagined an ideal American paradise and visited a park to imagine and draw up a paradise of their own. They focused on how early Americans viewed the wild American lands to the west, previously seen by European eyes. During the course of this unit, we will find out if this vision of American paradise was as good as it seems, or if finding paradise came at a heavy price.

8th grade ventures to Ellis Island

The students are in the middle of their Four Freedoms/ American Dream interdisciplinary unit. they have been looking at push and pull factors of immigrants coming to America. This fieldwork helped support students learning in understanding the process of immigration during its peak years here in NYC. Students completed a scavenger hunt while at Ellis Island to better understand the many steps immigrants had to go through in order to come to America.
