Message from Mrs. Mason
Mahaffey Elementary is a remarkable, unique place and who we are and what we stand for isn't possible without the continual outpouring of love, support and connection we have with our families and surrounding community.
Many thanks to everyone for all that you do daily to support Mahaffey and our students. Glad to be PLAID exudes in our community and our core values are seen prominently wherever our Scotties and their families are!
With the generosity of our community and PTO through our fundraising last year and this year, we are able to send ALL students in grades Kindergarten-5th on a field trip! We know these experiences are amazing add ons to the already great classroom learning they are a part of. Getting to take the students on a learning adventure helps generalize skills and content, as well as make memories for a lifetime!
In addition to field trips, our teachers have been able to come to us and ask for almost anything they desire to enhance their classrooms! Our dedicated teachers are used to paying for many items out of pocket, but with our amazing community, we have been able to handle these things for them. We love how dedicated they are in making learning engaging, fun and up to date!
Our Scottie Social put on by the PTO is our last fundraiser of this year. These monies will be used to pay off the last couple field trips of the year, prepare for end of year fun for both students and teachers, and create an account to ensure field trips can continue next year free of charge for the students! We hope to see you for a night of fun and games with family while supporting our school!
We are looking forward to another amazing month at Mahaffey! As always, my admin team and I are always here to support you with anything you need.

-Jonathan Harvell, Assistant Principal

STAAR Simulations and Upcoming STAAR Tests
Simulations:
For parents of students in grade 3, 4 and 5, we will be administering STAAR Simulation tests during the specified dates listed above, we want to encourage you to please study, review and support your students on these exams just like we would the 'real' ones, so we can get the best possible outcomes for each student. These tests will give us the best data on what curriculum and supports each student needs to be successful on the actual exam that tests all the content learned this school year.Your student's teacher will be able to support you in exactly what areas need additional help and support.
STAAR Tests:
All STAAR exams will take place early to mid May depending on your student's grade level and testing platform. We will share these dates soon.
This past year, the state of Texas passed House Bill 4545. This legislation requires schools to address learning loss very specifically if individuals do not pass their STAAR tests for Math and/or Reading.
Any student who does not pass or is absent from testing, will be required to receive 30 hours of intensified instruction prior to the end of the following school year.
As a campus, we will be hosting a Summer Learning Program for the students who will need this required intervention June 6-9, June 13-16 and June 20 &21. This 10 day program will run 8:00a-12:00p to respond to the content and learning gaps in a timely manner and help offset the time needed once the next school year begins. Transportation will be available for those who regularly qualify. Snacks will be provided to all who attend.
Parents will be notified if their child will need to attend by June 2. We will be making preliminary lists based on STAAR Simulation performances so we can be sure plans and supports can be ready in time.
Please reach out to an administrator for any questions you may have.
