Study Trip to Flat Fork Creek-THURSDAY

Don't forget that we will be heading to Flat Fork Creek next Thursday!! We will plan to leave TCE at 9:30 and we will be back at TCE around 11:15! Please make sure to watch the weather for this day so that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. No need to pack a sack lunch as we will eat at school during our normal lunch time when we return.

Study Trip to Castleton Mall & Buca Di Beppo

This semester we will be learning about our local community through the world of commerce. Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, February 6th, 7th, or 8th we are going to Castleton Square Mall to learn about producers, consumers, goods, and services. Students will explore the world of retail by identifying whether stores provide goods and/or services, using cardinal directions on a map, and enjoying a meal at Buca Di Beppo®.

STEAM Night

Mark your calendars for our TCE FAMILY STEAM NIGHT on Thursday,
January 31 from 5:30-7:00 pm. STEAM is an educational term to describe real-world opportunities for students to learn with science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math. At the TCE Family STEAM Night, TCE students and their family members of all ages are welcome to come and participate in a variety of unique, educational STEAM experiences. Participants will travel as a family (children with their adults) to share in the learning process! Pizza and water will be available in the cafeteria for families to purchase. We hope to see you there!

Optional Spelling Practice at Home

On Tuesday, a new set of words were sent home with your child. We will work with these words for two weeks at a time. Feel free to practice these sorts at home! Also, I will not be giving spelling tests over these words this year, but rather check with each student by checking to see if they can spell the words based on their spelling patterns.

Repeated Sort: Students will sort their words. Then check their words using the answer key. Then sort their words again!

Draw and Label: Students choose 10 of their words. Then they will draw a picture of each world and label it.

Blind Sort: Using given guide words, or headers, students spell or write in words in the correct category as a partner calls each word aloud without showing it.

Writing Sort: Students write their words under the correct category.

Speed Sort: Students sort words quickly under the correct categories (use a timer to see how fast they can do it!) Students love to beat records and to set goals for themselves.

Word Hunt: Students hunt through their own reading and writing for words that are additional examples of the sound, pattern, or meaning unit they study!

Buddy Sort: Using the given headers, students sort their words with a partner, then discuss. They will then check their work with their answer key.

Background Checks & Anti-Bullying Video

All who desire to volunteer, chaperone fieldtrips, or eat lunch in the cafeteria must have an approved background check on file and complete the Anti-bullying video. Background checks are good for 3 years. If you have questions about your background check, please contact the TCE office @ (317) 594-4310.

We are Learning

Reading

This week during our reading we took some time to share about what makes a books one that we like. Each child then got a list of the 2019 top Young Hoosier Book Award Nominees. On the sheet there is a spot for a ranking, as well as comments. After reading them all, each student will have the opportunity to vote for his/her favorite book.

We have also began to talk about making our reading more fluent. This week we talked about reading and rereading both in our head and out loud. They have been using a phone headset to read out loud. The shape of the phone allows for the students to hear their reading without being so loud that it interrupts others. They can hear their reading and work on having better inflection in their voice.

Writing

We started writing opinion pieces this week. We are starting this by writing letters to someone telling them to read one of our favorite books. We are working on convincing someone to read a book based on a character in the book. The students will write about their favorite character traits of the book characters and use persuasive writing to support their writing. We will explore persuasive writing through different topics in the upcoming weeks.

Math

We took time this week to look at money. During our addition unit earlier in the year we discussed adding different amounts of money so this week was somewhat of a review. We studies different coins and compared and contrasted real coins. We will continue to look into real world situations involving money in the upcoming weeks and will work on making change and different ways to make money.

Word Work

Social Studies

Second grade will be studying economics over the coming weeks. We will deepen our understanding of goods vs. services, consumers vs. producers, needs vs. wants, and human, capital, and natural resources. We will culminate our study of economics with a study trip to Castleton Mall in February..
