Millennium High School Students Sail on the Bay
On October 14, a group of Millennium High School students and staff chaperones spent the day on the San Francisco Bay with the Blue Water Sailing Foundation. MHS students had the chance to steer the boat, put up the sails and learn other sailing fundamentals. The event was financially supported by the MHS Parents Club. MHS is also grateful to Piedmont resident Eric Downing, who volunteers with the group and helped to bring the opportunity to students. Visit https://www.bluewaterfoundation.org/ for more information about the program.
PHS Diversity Club Brings Dessert for Fellow Students
The Piedmont High School Diversity Club celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by offering homemade churros to fellow students during lunch period October 6. One Club member and his family, who own a business and make churros, kept the pre-made treats in a commercial oven off-site and delivered them warm to students at lunch. The line was long and the churros were gone in nine minutes! Overall, Diversity Club members felt proud of what they accomplished, and happy to spread awareness of diverse cultures, especially through food and music.
Piedmont Middle School Students Practice Ancient Writing Skills
Piedmont Middle School 6th-graders studying Ancient Civilizations wrapped up their first unit by creating Cuneiform tablets. Students learned many of the things we use today were born in what many social scientists call the "first civilization" of Ancient Mesopotamia/Sumeria. Because many of the Empires in Ancient Mesopotamia wrote things down on clay tablets using cuneiform, social scientists are able to read and discern much of that period in history. Students learned some basic Cuneiform characters that roughly coincide with our alphabet, and practiced writing down things that are meaningful to them.
