The medical field widely recognizes Professor of Surgery and former Chair of Surgery at the University of Arizona Rainer Gruessner for his contributions to the surgical community. Dr. Gruessner has developed several techniques for minimally invasive procedures that significantly improve the quality of life for his patients.
In 2011, he and his team received widespread media attention and applause for their care for the victims of the tragic Tucson shooting which included former US Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who suffered a critical gunshot wound to the head.
Caring for the sick and wounded is not the only priority for Rainer Gruessner, as he also devotes a significant amount of time to teaching medical students, surgical residents and fellows.
Having served on many different directorial and leadership boards, Dr. Gruessner provides his students with premier medical training before they enter the professional workforce. He has overseen the training of more than 30 Chief Residents in the Department of Surgery at the University of Arizona.
Additionally, Dr. Gruessner has edited two comprehensive textbooks in the field of transplantation. A third textbook, due for release this year, documents the technological advances in surgery, trauma and critical care. In addition to his educational supplements, Dr. Gruessner has also documented his research in over 300 peer-reviewed manuscripts, over 80 book chapters, and has presented nearly 150 invited lectures on various topics. Each of these works is done with the intent to exchange new techniques with other medical professionals in pursuit of the greatest possible care given to patients.
