March Pirates of the Month
Pennies for Patients
During the program, students are encouraged to check between couch cushions, under the seats in the car, or in the dryer to collect loose change. Each child will be receiving a small 'bank' to collect their change for this project.
This is just one more way East Pirates are being encouraged to find ways to serve others because every small step adds up to make a BIG impact!
Texas Reads One Book
On Monday, April 15, each family will receive a copy of the book. We are asking that you take time each evening (Monday-Thursday) to participate in this special activity by following our East Elementary reading schedule. We plan to read along together for the next three weeks for about 10 minutes per night.
In school, your child will be having a lot of fun with our book! We will have daily trivia questions to encourage and reward reading and will have a variety of activities across campus and in classrooms, too!
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader. It is also a fun bonding experience for your family. Through the Texas Reads One Book program, we are working to build a strong community of readers at our school and across our state. Everyone - students, parents, teachers, and administrators - will all be participating together!
Texas Reads One Book is a unique program in which children at all elementary grade levels listen to their parents read the same book. This approach makes sound educational sense. Reading professionals realize the benefits of reading books that are beyond a child's own reading level. You can and should continue reading chapter books with your children, even when they are older and are able to read by themselves.
I look forward to reading along with you and your family about Humphrey and Og as they learn how to become better friends to both each other and the students of Room 26 in Longfellow School. "When a whole state reads a book, there is a lot to talk about!"
Read-A-Thon
The main focus of the Read-A-Thon and our Texas Reads One Book campaign is a commitment to improving reading skills. This time promises to be a fun, exciting journey for all participants as they begin a personal Reading Adventure that challenges each reader (and each family) to complete the reading schedule for Friendship According to Humphrey over the next three weeks.
Both the Read-A-Thon and our Texas Reads One Book program will kickoff next Monday, April 15. Your involvement in both programs will help encourage a lasting love of reading.
