Superintendent Briefing
August 2021
A Note from Dr. Hanson, Superintendent
Dear, Teachers, Friends, & Families,
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We welcome you back for another great school year here within the North Platte Public Schools with great anticipation and enthusiasm! The first school day for students in grades K-8 and 9 will be Monday, August 16, 2021. The first day of school for all other students will be on Tuesday, August 17, 2021.
Our school staff is excited to welcome you and your children to another great year here in NPPS! Many great things are happening at our schools, so check out the district and school websites: http://www.nppsd.org/. Keep an eye on your email, check phone messages, and watch for flyers and other materials that will be sent home with your students the first few days of school to let you know about activities and events. You can also check out my monthly briefings on the new nppsd.org website or app.
North Platte Public Schools believe that the best place for children to learn is in person. The Return to School Plan is designed to create the safest environment for our students and staff while keeping our schools open to in-person learning. We believe this plan supports the needs of our students, staff, and families while acknowledging the current risk to the health and safety concerns within the community and the schools.
North Platte Public Schools will continuously review and update the 2021-22 NPPS Return to School Plan throughout the school year as the risk of COVID-19 spreads in our community and schools. This work will be ongoing as new research emerges and more guidance is provided to the school district from the West Central District Health Department (WCDHD), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE), and the U.S. Department of Education.
Any changes to our plan and protocols will be communicated ahead of time through the website https://www.nppsd.org/, email, and social media.
North Platte Public Schools will adjust protocols (including face-covering requirements) as necessary to address changing conditions. During the 2021-2022 school year, protocols and requirements may change for a specific school building, program, classroom, transportation, or a setting based on the number of positive cases, contact tracing, community test positivity rate, community conditions, and risk of spread.
I also want to remind all parents/guardians of our incredible volunteer program! The North Platte Public School District is well known for its strong volunteer program where parents and community members are encouraged to actively participate in the educational processes of our schools in various ways. During regular school hours, volunteers, visitors, and families are welcome in our school buildings as long as they either wear a face covering at all times or provide proof that they are fully vaccinated. For volunteers, visitors, and families who are fully vaccinated, face-coverings are optional. For volunteers and visitors who are not fully vaccinated, face coverings are required.
As we get ready for a new school year, I want once again to draw your attention to the importance of school attendance. Did you know that absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year? Did you know poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade? Did you know that by 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school? Finally, did you know that research shows that missing 10% of the school year, equivalent to 18 days here at NPPS, negatively affects students' academic performance? That’s just two days per month!
Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways to prepare your child for success – both in school and life. We need your support. When you make school attendance a priority, you help your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits, and have a better chance of graduating from high school. Ultimately, attendance will assist your student in being ready to successfully meet the many opportunities life has in store for them! Please help us help your child to make daily school attendance a priority!
In closing, the North Platte Public Schools’ staff continue to work tirelessly to make our schools a place where your child wants to come each day to challenge themselves, socialize, and achieve all that they can as learners! We all care deeply about the success of our children! We are lucky to have such a dedicated and caring staff whose focus and priorities are all in the right places – building positive relationships with each student! Our students and staff honor our Code of Conduct by demonstrating respect, honesty, courage, compassion, and responsibility. Our parents and the entire community model these same values for our students.
I am proud to be your Superintendent of Schools and work hard to make sure our pursuit for GREATNESS continues to thrive in NPPS! We are all very proud to be NPPS BULLDOGS!
WE ARE NPPS! We are better together, and together we accomplish great things. I look forward to another great year!
Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with questions, comments, or concerns. Our contact information is on the District website http://www.nppsd.org/.
Sincerely,
Ron Hanson, NPPS
Superintendent

1:00 pm – Until Food is Gone
This is an OPEN AIR, DRIVE THRU Distribution. Patrons will drive their car through a line, and volunteers will bring the boxed food to the car. Free of charge. 325 Households will be served on a first come first serve basis. The Food Pantry is sponsored by the Food Bank of the Heartland.
Please start the line OUTSIDE of the school parking lot next to the tennis courts. DO NOT COME INTO THE PARKING LOT PRIOR TO THE SEMI UNLOADING THE DISTRIBUTION ITEMS.
If you are in the parking lot prior to the gates opening we will ask you to move your vehicle. When the mobile distribution begins, cars can drive up to the gate by the Northeast corner of the football field. Patrons will drive through the alley between the football field and the high school building, exiting on West A Street. Use only the entrance closest to the tennis courts to avoid congestion as students leave after school. While waiting for the distribution to begin you need to follow all traffic laws. Do not block driveways or streets for any reason. Safety is our number one concern and we do not want anyone to get hurt.
