Pratt's Primary Corner
Weekly Update- January 10, 2020
Week at a Glance
Math- Unit 4 is underway and I am excited to say we will jump into fractions a bit. I LOVE teaching fractions because I struggled so much with them as a student. It wasn't until a few years ago when I took a year long professional development on fractions that I realized how much I relied on procedures rather than conceptual understanding. I am very passionate about help students develop a deep understanding of fractions that will benefit them long term. Tricks and procedures may work now, but I want them to rely on their own reasoning rather than tricks.
Writing- We are still working on our personal narratives and students love telling true stories about a small moment in their lives. They are currently helping me revise a personal narrative I have written about a small moment with my grandpa. The title is The Best Cake I Never Had. Be sure to ask them about it and how they've helped me improve as a writer. :)
Science/ Computer Science- I am so excited that we have started E4Tech Module 2 this week!! This module is very engaging for students! We are helping the E4 Toy Factory determine how lights work in toys so they can create one! This module will be less math-heavy and involve circuits and energy.
Social Studies- We have been learning about different types of transportation and discussing mobility. Right before break students participated in a simulation where they had to plan their day based on available transportation- there were challenges along the way that would throw a wrench into their day. They really enjoyed this and started to see how it can be difficult to live your every day life if your transportation needs aren't met. For example, if you rely on the bus to get to work and you have a broken leg, you may to be able to get to the bus. Or, if you need to take an Uber, but don't have a smartphone you could be stuck without a ride. I hope this look into mobility will help students develop understanding and empathy for those with different lifestyles.
