A Message from Father Lane
On behalf of our "Forward in Fath, Hope & Love Campaign", we thank you for your generous gift of $777.00 toward our parking lot and driveways. This donation is an incredible commitment to our parish's future. Your gift is a tremendous testimony to your gracious stewardship and care of our parish faith community. You are helping to make our dream and improvements a reality as we move toward our goal of one million dollars. We are so grateful!
You are always in my prayers and thoughts around the Table of the LORD. Let us continue to pray for each other and the success of our campaign. Again - thank you so much.
In Christ our Eucharist,
Reverend John Thomas Lane, SSS, '79
Pastor

On Wednesday, February 27th at 7:00 pm, join us in the SPB Eymard Room, for Jesse Weinberger’s presentation to parents and guardians who want to better understand how to guide their children through the ever-changing digital world.
Jesse is a nationally recognized Internet Safety Presenter, TEDx Speaker, and author. She speaks at elementary, middle, and high schools, and on college campuses across the country. She works with a wide range of individuals from law enforcement to teachers, and has a particular passion for helping parents learn how best keep their children safe in the digital world. Any adult with a child in his/her life can benefit from hearing Jesse’s talk! To learn more about Jesse, visit www.OvernightGeekUniversity.com and please attend this SPB PTO sponsored event.
Please note:
The evening presentation on 2/27 is for adults only. You are welcome to invite adult family members and friends to attend. After Jesse's presentation, she will answer questions both in front of the group and privately. This event is expected to go from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
Playground/Lunchroom Supervision-Primary Grades
The links to sign up for playground/lunchroom supervision for parents/guardians of students in grades Kindergarten-4 for the remainder of the school year are now live!
We are asking that each family (mom, dad, grandma, etc.) choose at least two days to volunteer each time slot being 11:00-1:00. There are many, many time slots open! If you have a child in another grade level, but would find the time to help, please feel free to fill one of the open slots. We are always grateful for the help!
This is a great way for you to interact with your child and his/her classmates during the school day! Lunch/Recess Volunteers should arrive to school at 11:00 and check in at the office. Duties will include supervising students at recess, escorting students to the cafeteria from recess, and supervising in the cafeteria. Volunteers will be with one teacher and two "core" volunteers each day to help direct. Remember that after your two volunteer time slots, you are done for the year, as each month is assigned to a different grade.
Thank you again for your time and service to the students and teachers of SPB! Simply click on the grade level link to pick a time convenient for you: Grade 3, Grade 2, Grade 1, or Kindergarten.

From the Pastor's Perspective
Some folks have recently approached me to address the concern about “always asking for money.” Yes, it seems that there is frequently an appeal for additional funds. In our history, the Roman Catholic Church, and specifically our parish, has been a major center of ministry and service. Be assured that I, along with the Finance Council, continuously watch over the financial health of our parish – with the school being the largest “line item” in the budget of the church (parish). We have a responsibility, a duty, to keep you in the know about the financial health of our faith community.
Basically, there are five different types of financial appeals:
Tithing. This is our primary source of funding our day-to-day operations at the parish (church and school). Per the registration agreement signed before the beginning of this school year, each school parishioner household is obligated to tithe $750, with the non-parishioner rate full tuition. This amount is to be paid from July through June (fiscal year).
Our 2015 Pastoral Plan stated transparency as a goal. We achieve this by publicizing our financial reports each week in the parish bulletin. Our goal is to list our expenses and to keep you “in the know” and see your “tithing at work!” We have a 3.2-million-dollar budget. This mean that together our faith family must raise 3.2 million dollars through tuition, tithing, fundraising and grant-seeking. To help clarify our needs, here are our constant expenses:
· Every two weeks we have a payroll of $83K.
· We have a monthly Blessed Sacrament Community (four of us) payroll of 16K.
· 26K in health benefits, 15K in retirement, utilities, maintenance (mostly paid by the parish), etc.
Since 1955, our parish has been dedicated to upholding a vibrant school that provides a quality, Catholic education. in a healthy, safe environment. Most recently the parish paid for the school roof over the early elementary wing the roof over Father O’Brien Hall and the school gymnasium roof. Maintenance campaigns, like roofs, windows and parking lots are not the most glamorous; however, they are quite necessary for the safety, and appearance of our campus. (Incidentally, parish projects are tax-deductible.)
Additional Parish Appeals. We periodically request funds for our Manna Ministry, that assists parishioners in emergency situations. We also have a collection for our Helping Hands Ministry that assists those less fortunate in the community. We also have regular collections to pay off our monthly roof loan. There are yearly requests for help with Christmas and Easter flowers, for example.
Diocese-mandated collections. We also belong to the “larger” church, where we contribute to the ministry of the diocese and are called to support The Diocese of Cleveland. The diocese requires us to make annual appeals for causes such as the Church in Eastern Europe and Catholic Communications. We are currently in the midst of our Catholic Charities campaign, our face – Christ’s face – to the most vulnerable and in need in northeast Ohio. Each year we are given a goal from the diocese so that each parish contributes to the larger 8-county goal. This year our parish’s portion is $163,000 of the 13.5 million diocesan goal. Once a year we share this information with you at Mass. (We did this two weekends ago) The diocese mails most folks a request in the middle of January. One makes a pledge/commitment and has the entire fiscal year to fulfill their commitment.
Fundraisers. Several ministries and organizations hold various fundraisers throughout the year to supplement the budget. These activities/events also build community and offer the opportunity for fun such as our yearly Walk-a-Thon In addition, we typically support campaigns such as Harvest for Hunger.
Capital Expenses. Occasionally, we need to raise funds to support a major capital expense. This is the case with our current driveway-parking lot (playground) campaign of a million dollars.
The Finance Council and I are sensitive to the many expenses and fees due this time of the year including Christmas bills registration fees, athletic fees, tuition and other personal items. We chose to roll out our capital campaign in the fall of 2018 to inform and assist you in planning your personal budgets with your careful consideration and information toward your faith family’s budget.
May our transparency and awareness support us together as we painstakingly care for all our homes. Thank you for your commitment to share God’s blessings with your faith community.
Meanwhile, in another column very soon, I’ll address another “family concern.” I encourage you to read the bulletin this Sunday to prepare for Lent and look forward to seeing you Sunday at Mass – forward in faith, hope and love. Let us continue to pray for each other!
In Christ our Eucharist,
Reverend John Thomas Lane, SSS
8th Pastor
From our Advancement Office, Kelly Ericsson
We are now over $200,000! We are getting closer and closer each day to our goal of raising a million dollars for our playground/parking lots and driveways. As folks’ tax refunds, stock options, special gifts or other dividends come into their lives, they are sharing them with our capital improvement project! We are so grateful! Here are two more testimonies this week:
· I am proud to be part of this faith community, and I hope that my contribution is a small part in helping us achieve our goal for the benefit of all in the community.
– Diane Raguz, Principal
· My mom and dad loved this parish! The ministry and love they felt from you, your constant visits to them when they were sick, and the ongoing love that they had for making SPB a better place made us as a family realize we, too, in honor and memory of them, needed to give to the driveway campaign.

Other Parish News
Ash Wednesday is March 6: Have you chosen the time you’ll begin your Lent with us? Masses are at 6:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 7:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. service.
Filling the Church for Tetelestai: Speaking of the Lenten season, plan on attending the production of the musical play “Tetelestai.” (This is the Greek word that means, “It is Finished,” the last words of Christ on the cross.) Please invite everyone to be part of this ecumenical passion play/musical, sharing the last week of Christ’s life and his resurrection from the dead. Open to all ages, Friday, March 1 & Saturday, March 2 at 8:00 p.m. On Sunday, March 3 there is a matinee at 2:00 p.m. The production takes place in church around the sanctuary (and not on the altar – so this weekend of Masses you will see the stage in the sanctuary). The production is free, but there will be a free-will offering taken for the costs of the musical.
