VPS Home-School Connection
A Resource for Families, Week of May 4th
Dear Families,
The news we received from our governor today about school remaining closed through the remainder of the academic year was not surprising but is certainly incredibly sad. While we are appreciative to have more information, it brings all of us at VPS so many feelings of disappointment and loss. We miss your children SO MUCH and there is nothing we want more than to be together with them at school.
It is absolutely normal for you and your child to experience a range of emotions about this news. I would encourage you to spend time with your child talking about what you are all feeling. Being able to talk about their feelings helps child process what is happening and provides them with extra support and care.
We also know there are many different things we will need to figure out as a district, including how we will have closure to the year with our children, how we will return your child's belongings in the building, and what the return to school may look like for the children in the fall. There will be many details to figure out along the way and we will certainly share information as it all gets figured out.
School Wide Book Club: Our library, Mrs. Linse, is running a school-wide Family Book Club this Friday, May 8th at 5:00 p.m. via Zoom video. The club will focus on this week's chapter book read aloud, Saving Winslow, by author Sharon Creech. You can access the read aloud link in the Smore or by clicking HERE. To attend, please email linsem@victorschools.org for the invitation link.
Access to Books: Knowing how important reading is for our children, we are offering two different ways to increase children's access to books.
Curbside Book Pickup: Our library will be offering curbside pickup next week. Our amazing librarian, Mrs. Linse, and library clerk, Mrs. Ohle, will be creating bags of books for families who would like one. Please complete a form for each of your VPS children by clicking HERE to indicate your interest. All forms need to be submitted by 3:00 p.m. on Monday, May 4th so there is time to gather the books for the pick-up times.
- Curbside pick-up for children in K/1 Multiage and Second Grade will be on Wednesday, May 6th from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
- Curbside pick-up for children in 2/3 Multiage and Third Grade will be on Friday, May 8th from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
When you come to the pick-up, please remain in your car. The bag of books will be delivered to your car as you drive up to the school entrance. We will also take back library books you wish to return from your house.
We hope this small effort will support your work to keep your child reading daily. Thank you for all you are doing to support distance learning with us.
Book Fair: We had an Usborne book fair scheduled for May 4th - 15th and the company has offered to continue the book fair online. Half of the price of every book you buy goes to our library, but we are not running this as a fundraiser. It is simply an opportunity we hope some families will find helpful in this time of reduced services. To see the book fair flyer, click HERE. If you would like to purchase books, you can click HERE to go to the online shop, purchase the books your child would like, and they will be delivered to your home. More details are on the Library's Enrichment Page.
Student Organized Can Drive: One of our second grade students, Sancia Brescia, has organized a can drive to benefit the Victor-Farmington Food Cupboard. It will take place on Sunday, May 3rd and Sunday, May 10th from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. You can find all the details by clicking HERE.
Quick Tech Tip: Here's a short video on how to access our Music Department's Distance Learning resources.
Please know we are here for you and your child. If you or your child needs any kind of support, please reach out to your child's teacher or one of our school psychologists or counselor.
With Great Appreciation,
Jen Check
