Meadow Park News
October 5th, 2018
Principal's Corner
Hello Meadow Park Families,
First, thank you to the many of you who supported the Jog-a-thon event in countless ways today! We had parent volunteers setting up the course, community partners presenting to students, our staff working hard to make sure every student was accounted for on a crazy day, and our wonderful PTO helping to coordinate the day with our admin team. Our students also deserve thanks for making today an excellent day and continuing to bring in pledges for our PTO. Keep up the good work -- rumor has it I’ll be dressed in a Unicorn onesie once we reach $20,000. Let’s get there.
We are entering the final week of ordering Meadow Park Spirit Wear for the 18-19 school year. This year’s shirt is black with an Incredibles inspired Meadow Park Logo as seen in our staff photo. T-Shirts are $10 and black hoodies will be $20. If you are interested in ordering, head to the BSD Online Payment System HERE or by sending a check made out to Meadow Park with this ORDER FORM to the main office. All orders are due by Thursday, October 11th at 8 pm!
Next week, we have conferences on Wednesday evening and throughout the day Thursday. Students do not attend school on Thursday or Friday next week! Our online sign-ups will be closed at 9 am on Tuesday, October 9th in order for our team to get lists generated for all teachers. Please make sure to sign up before 9 am on 10/9! The direct link to sign up is HERE. If you happen to forget to sign up until the online system is closed, you can always call the front office to schedule an appointment time! The direct line is 503-356-2640. Our team will have access to the schedule and do our best to schedule you in.
Make it a great week!

Learner Profile & Connections
We are knowledgeable!
The Learner Profile Attribute for the month of October is KNOWLEDGEABLE. This attribute encourages learners to build in-depth knowledge and understanding across subject areas through the exploration of local and global issues. One way students explore these issues is through concept based learning. Key concepts promote the development of a broad curriculum. They represent big ideas that are both relevant within and across disciplines and subjects. Inquiry into key concepts can facilitate connections between and among subjects. MYP students use these concepts as a vehicle to inquire into issues and ideas of personal, local and global significance and examine their knowledge holistically.
Home-School Connection
At home take the opportunity to help your student reflect on the knowledge they has gained so far this school year. Some probing questions to encourage deeper reflection: Tell me about a topic or unit of study you really enjoyed this year? Why did you enjoy it? What knowledge did you gain or attain a deeper understanding? Is there a connection between this class and another? Conversely, discuss a topic or unit of study that was less enjoyable. Often, adolescents will talk about units or topics that they struggled with. This is an opportunity to strengthen their growth mindset and a wonderful lead up to conferences.Meadow Park's Scholastic Book Fair
RUN THE RAINBOW! - Jog-A-Thon 2018
Now it is time to collect all of those final pledges! When you have finished collecting pledges, turn in your PLEDGE COLLECTION SHEET to your Advisory teacher. Friday, October 19th is the absolute last day to turn in Pledge Sheets and qualify for drawings, as well as the Advisory class competition.
We appreciate all of the efforts families are making in helping us raise money for future technology, materials for classroom projects, P.E. equipment, field trips, and more!
Don't forget...every student who raises $30 or more will have their name added to a drawing for prizes. Any student that raises $100 or more will have their name added to a drawing for grand prizes. We are tracking pledges through advisory classes - help your son or daughter win a class party!
We will be announcing winner and winning Advisory Class Parties on Monday, October 22nd!

TAG - Talent and Gifted
Every year all students are considered for identification as Talented and Gifted in Beaverton School District. These services are usually provided within the classroom by the teacher(s). In accordance with Oregon law, District policy defines gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
In accordance with OAR 581-022-1310, our District is also committed to efforts in the identification of students from ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, and students who are culturally different or economically disadvantaged.
If you think your child might exhibit qualities that typically are used to describe giftedness, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form (linked below). Because we believe that parents are excellent observers of their child’s potential, we invite your input into this nomination process. This parent form is based on the Kingore Observation Inventory that is used by classroom teachers in the fall for a six-week period of time. Circle those characteristics that describe your child and provide supporting examples whenever possible. While completing this form does not guarantee that your child will be tested, it will give your school’s TAG committee valuable additional information in the nomination process.
Upon receipt, your completed form becomes part of the school’s identification process. Parents will be notified regarding testing eligibility, and the required permission form will be sent to parents prior to testing. Testing can begin as early as mid-November, and identification is usually completed within six weeks.
The Parent Information Form (linked below) may be completed and returned to your school’s TAG facilitator, or the school’s office.

Beaverton Education Phone-A-Thon
Between October 9th -October 17th, hundreds of Beaverton-area high school students and community volunteers will telephone Beaverton residents during the Beaverton Education Foundation’s 20th annual Phone-a-thon, requesting donations to fund critical classroom, after-school, and summer programs across our District.
Last school year, Beaverton Education Foundation’s 3,000 donors helped fund 96 programs and activities that reached 22,261 students at all 53 schools. Our goal this year is to fund 130 projects and reach 30,000 students at all 53 schools, in honor of our 30th anniversary supporting inspiration, innovation and success in Beaverton schools. Your financial support of BEF is vital and ensures that thousands of students benefit from these important hands-on projects and programs.
Costs of our phone-a-thon are underwritten by our generous sponsors, so that your tax-deductible donation can help more Beaverton kids. BEF thanks you for your support.
