UPDATE: STUDY IS NOW STATEWIDE | Expectant Native Hawaiian women to contribute to a healthy future for their babies, their communities
Associate Professor in Human Nutrition
Expectant mothers must be Native Hawaiian, 18 years and over, live in Hawai’i, and have a smartphone to download the study’s app. Baby’s vitals are recorded from birth, and mom completes a survey when baby is 2 months old. Then at the 4th, 6th, 9th, and 12th months, mom will use the app to take photos of her meals and the baby’s meals for 3 days. No baby pictures and no selfies are required. Anyone with decent Instagram skills can do this, said Revilla. “Don’t we all take pictures of our food?”

WIlled Body Program new applications on hold
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, JABSOM continues to have reduced need for anatomical gifts. Therefore, JABSOM will not be accepting/processing additional donor Anatomical Gift Donation forms after Friday, October 1, 2021. Any planned donations will require that the original-signed Anatomical Gift Donation forms be postmarked by October 1, 2021 to be processed. We will not accept any applications by fax or email. Any paperwork received after this date will be held in a secure file with only acknowledgement of receipt until we are able to begin accepting applications again.
IMPORTANT: Those who are current donors, whose donor status is up to date, who have their green donor identification card will remain enrolled. We will continue to accept body donations of enrolled donors for now. However, should the program approach capacity, JABSOM may have to temporarily stop accepting body donations even from enrolled donors. Please check our website for updates: https://jabsom.hawaii.edu/donors/willedbody/. If you have any questions, please contact the Willed Body Program at 808-692-1445 or wbdonor@hawaii.edu.What's New in PubMed?

Kamehameha Schools grad says the representation of NH/PI in medicine needs to grow
Guest research submission by Kamehameha Schools graduate (c/o 2008) and Stanford University Radiation Oncology Resident ( PGY2) Kekoa Tapara, MD, PhD, and Curtiland Deville Jr., MD, who analyzed the representative quotients of allopathic medical students, residents, and physicians who identify as Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders.
The number of Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander residents appears to be significantly declining and unequally distributed across specialties. Their representation should be prioritized, particularly in specialty programs, through early mentorship, recruitment, and retainment.
Hope through Action: National Suicide Prevention Month
Goebert will be on KHON2's Modern Wahine to speak about suicide prevention on the following air dates of Modern Wahine: Sunday, 9/26, at 7 pm on KHII Plus, two special encore presentations on KHON: Sunday, 9/26, at 11:05 pm, and Saturday, 10/2, at 9:30pm.
In Hawai‘i, one suicide death occurs nearly every other day. Suicide can have lasting harmful effects on individuals, families, and communities. There has been an increasing trend in the number of people treated in Hawaiʻi hospitals and emergency departments for non-fatal suicide attempts over the decade. For every suicide death, there are two hospitalization and 3 emergency room visits. Throughout the pandemic, levels of isolation and loss, distress, grief and anxiety have risen. Hawai‘i has seen increase usage of crisis phone and text lines as well as mental health services. Hawai‘i has identified suicide prevention as a priority and set a bold goal of reducing suicidality 25% by 2025 though hope, help, and healing efforts. Hope includes building our strengths, self-care and resilience; help is having real conversations about mental health and suicide and connecting to supports; healing included the grief process, forgiveness, and passing life forward. Suicide prevention is a priority at JABSOM. Find out more at UH Med Now.
