Coronavirus Update
This week, administration from across the district will be attending a workshop at the BCIU to learn more about the coronavirus and how to keep everyone safe in our schools. If you want more information on the coronavirus, please visit the PDE website.
March 3, 2020
Good afternoon,
The purpose of this communication is to update our community on the Coronavirus which has received widespread media attention in recent days. Recent statements from the United States Center for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) have asked schools to prepare for the possibility of the virus spreading. The Oley Valley School District is taking the following precautions.
Throughout flu season it is recommended that everyone adhere to the following preventative measures, as recommended by the PA Department of Health:
· Cover coughs or sneezes with your elbow. Do not use your hands!
· Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
· Clean surfaces frequently, including countertops, light switches, cell phones, remotes, and other frequently touched items.
· If your child is sick and running a fever, defined as a temperature greater than or equal to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, please keep them out of school until they are fever-free for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medications.
In addition to typical efforts to maintain clean and healthy schools, our school nurses carefully monitor our students for symptoms. We are encouraging all families to protect themselves from illnesses such as the common cold, flu, and also the coronavirus, by adhering to the recommendations, found in the pdf attachment, from the Center for Disease Control.
As a District, we are also following these precautions for our students and staff:
· Nightly disinfection of all hard surfaces that students and staff come in contact with (i.e. door handles, desks, water fountains, counter surfaces, etc.)
· Additional training of our facilities staff to ensure preventative precautions are in place.
· Additional training for our school nurses regarding the assessment of symptoms.
The CDC has many resources available at www.cdc.gov/COVID19
The Oley Valley School District will continue to follow the CDC and Pennsylvania Department of Health updates and recommendations regarding the containment of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19.) The health, safety, and welfare of our students, faculty, and staff are of utmost importance to us. We continue to follow district procedures by maintaining our facilities using EPA registered institutional disinfecting materials. We will track and follow all virus updates and comply with any additional recommendations provided to the district from local, state, or federal health officials.
As always, if you have any concerns regarding your child’s health, it is recommended that you consult with your child’s primary care physician. While no increase in related symptoms has been observed within our School District, if a regional outbreak or a significant number of cases would occur, the Oley Valley School District will adhere to PA Department of Health’s direction and consult with local Emergency Management professionals, as appropriate.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the health services office at your school.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tracy S. Shank
Superintendent of Schools
