Week 1 - Term 4 (Thursday 15 October)
St Jerome’s Primary School acknowledges and pays respect to the Traditional Owners and Elders, both past and present, of the lands on which this school is located.
Dear Parents and members of our school community
Welcome back to Term 4!
I do hope the holiday break allowed for some time to rest for you and your family. Having said this, I do remember the days of having little people at home during the holiday breaks. It was so busy, especially if you were still working throughout the two weeks. If you were at home, not having to get uniforms ready and lunches for the morning rush, did allow for a little space in your morning.
I appreciate that just the thought of it being the middle of October, means we are headed towards the end of the 2020 school year. For me this is quite poignant as I conclude a career in education that began back in 1972 in Deer Park Primary School with a class of thirty-six Pre Primary students. I am treasuring every day with this beautiful school community until then.
It also means everything seems to move quickly over the next couple of months. There is plenty on at school, and plenty on in our own lives. I feel like saying to everyone: hold on for a wild ride! You will see our school calendar start to fill up with events ranging from this week’s Year 6 Camp to Book Week Parade, Grandparents' Day, Interschool Athletics, to Year 6 Confirmation and the highly anticipated Aladdin production and family picnic. Please read over the school calendar and circle the must attend dates.
Congratulations to the Year 3 students who celebrated the Sacrament of Penance for the first time during the holiday break.
The children have been taught to listen to their Inner Voice Conscience. Our little inner voice reminds us to make good choices. It helps us to know what God wants us to do. It helps us know the difference between right and wrong. It helps us to recognize our poor choices. The Holy Spirit helps us to listen to and follow our conscience.
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ, God forgave you. Ephesians 4:32
I wish I could take the credit for the following words. I saw this post on a social media site and thought just how true its content is. Parents worry about their children even when that parent is old and gray.
My oldest son, who is almost 27, wasn’t feeling well. When I texted him to see how he was doing he said “You don’t need to worry about me.”
Rubbish!
Apparently, he doesn’t know how the system works.
Basically, it goes like this. Our kids are born. And we start worrying. Actually, we start worrying even before they are born.
And it never ends. NEVER. Not when they are ten or twenty or 28 years, nine months and twelve days. Dinosaur mums probably worried about their three-hundred-year-old dinosaur children.
We worry when they go to daycare and kindergarten, primary & secondary school; when they find a job or go to TAFE or Uni. We worry when they are sick or unhappy. We worry when they don’t text us back. We worry they might get their hearts broken. We worry when there’s a pandemic and when there’s no pandemic. We worry that they might be cold or hungry. And on and on and on!
So my dear son, it’s super nice of you to tell me that I don’t have to worry about you. But until I take my last breath on this earth, I will be your mum. Which means I will worry.
PS- When I get to Heaven, I will worry from there too.
In this busy time, that old saying "Stop and smell the roses" seems very appropriate. Don't walk past our wonderful rose garden without talking about your favourite rose with your children. I've enjoyed seeing many parents taking photos of their children in front of the roses.
Special thanks go to our gardener, Paul Connop, for his great care of our rose garden.

‘Carpark and Drive-Through’ update
Having met with the representatives from Cockburn Council last term regarding the issues around queuing of cars on Rockingham Road and the problems to traffic flow that this causes, we were required to create a Risk Assessment Matrix to assess the issues and come up with a plan to mitigate these.
Following on from this, we are currently writing a Carpark and Drive-Through Policy, which we will post on our website as soon as it is completed.
At this point, I want to summarise the key issues with which we need parents to support us, for the benefit and safety of all.
· Courteous behaviour on the roads is critical to road safety. It is important therefore that each car travelling from the south along Rockingham Road is asked to give way to one car travelling from the northern direction so that there is a one - one flow happening from both directions.
· Parents are asked not to attempt to turn right from Troode Street onto Rockingham road, as this is a major cause of delay, with cars backing up right through the Drive Through. All traffic should be turning Left onto Rockingham Road.
Parents of Kindy children
· Please arrive by 2:40, park and collect your children and then leave to create spaces for PP-6 parents.
Parents of PP-Yr 6 children
· Where possible, do not arrive at or before 3:03pm and queue, but delay until after 3:15pm when the traffic is flowing easily. Please remind your children to be watching for you.
· If you do arrive before or at 3:03pm, please park in any available space and do not wait in front of the cones for the Drive Through to open as this creates the problem of traffic backing up on Rockingham Road.
· Please have your child’s surname printed in large bold letters on your passenger visor.
IMPORTANT
Once there is a backup of four or more cars queueing from either direction on Rockingham Road, those cars already on the approach to the Drive Through will be directed by Duty Staff to access free bays in the carpark. This will enable those cars queuing on Rockingham Road to enter the Drive Through and reduce the obstruction to traffic flow.
We understand that this may cause frustration for those drivers asked to park, but we ask that you remain calm and courteous as you follow the directions of the Duty Staff.
Please inform any guardian or other family members who are picking up your children of these requirements.
Many thanks

Thank you to all those who joined into the spirit for the occasion and came dressed in their COVID clothes on Tuesday. We had some very relaxed styles happening along with some full PPE as well!
The Day raised $521 .00 for Fr Chris De Sousa’s school in Mozambique.

Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum - Parent Tips
Tip #17 – Teach your child emergency phone numbers
Tip #18 – It’s OK to break the rules in an emergency situation to keep yourself safe. You may need to interrupt an adult while they are speaking; you may feel safer to use the disabled toilet than the regular one; you may need to tell a secret that someone has shared with you; you may need to say “NO” in a situation where you would normally comply.

Angelico Art Exhibition - People's Choice Award Winner
Congratulations to Kiarra G (Year 5) for winning the Angelico Art Exhibition People’s Choice Award for Primary School. More than 1200 votes were counted by Catholic Arts across the primary and secondary age groups to determine one winner for each and Kiarra’s wonderful art piece of our beautiful school dog, Jinkx, was voted for the most times in the primary category. Well done, Kiarra and thank you to our lovely Jinkx for being a very worthy art subject, indeed!
