Mrs. Drudy's eLearning Day #1
February 18, 2019
Day #1 Agenda
Good morning, and welcome students and families to our very first eLearning Day here at Liberty Elementary School! Hopefully, you will find these activities both fun and easy to do. In the words of Mrs. Sourbeer, "This is a work in progress, and we will work out the kinks as we go. Communication and patience will only make this better." With that in mind, please do not hesitate to reach out to me during the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. if you have questions or concerns about the assignments and/or activities. As you've already noticed, hard copies have been distributed for nearly all of the activities.
All of our students will be informed of their learning targets for the day by looking at the statements under the words "Big Idea." These statements are always posted in the classroom so students are aware of their learning expectations.
The student work for this day covers content that would have been addressed if school were in session in a traditional setting. With that said, it is important to remember that assignments must be turned in by Monday, February 25th. If these assignments are not turned in, this day will be counted as an absence for your child.
So let's get started on our inaugural eLearning Day!!!!!!
Morning Message
Obviously, you do not have your whiteboard nor your task journal at home, so simply complete the Morning Message tasks on a piece of paper (or directly on the actual printed copy) and return to school when we get back. The text is difficult. Click the video to read along chorally while I read it with you. Be sure to keep your eyes on the text. Click below to download and read the Morning Message.
Big Idea:
We can orally read grade-level appropriate or higher texts smoothly and accurately, with expression that connotes comprehension at the independent level.
Language Arts on the Trail
Students will put the Iditarod-related words in alphabetical order on the lines. Use the ABC line-up at the top of the page as your visual. Please keep in mind that the words "dog booties" go together and should be placed on the same line. Just the same "bib overalls" will be treated as such.
Big Idea:
A knowledge of alphabetical order can help us when we consult reference materials (e.g., dictionary or thesaurus)
Cold Capitals
Read each sentence and place a capital letter wherever it is needed. Use the same editing procedure that we use during You're the Teacher, or Y.T.T.. Remember, we place three small lines under the lowercase letter and write the uppercase letter just above.
Big Idea:
We can edit writing for format and conventions (e.g., spelling, capitalization, usage, punctuation); and provide feedback to other writers.
Spelling
Use the Spelling Activity Menu and choose 3 different activities to practice your spelling words. Simply complete these on any paper. Along with the activity menu is a list of this week's words. This activity will not be due until Friday.
Big Idea:
We can correctly spell words with short and long vowel sounds, r-controlled vowels, and consonant-blend patterns.
Reading: Mellow Musher
Big Idea:
We can read and comprehend a variety of nonfiction texts.
Writing: To Disqualify, or Not?
Big Idea:
We can write a logically connected paragraph or paragraphs that introduce an opinion, with a concluding statement and multiple reasons to explain why a certain course of action should be followed.
Hideaway Husky
Mathin' Down the Trail
Big Idea:
I can solve simple addition, subtraction, and comparison problems using information shown on a graph.
Next, you will solve everyday math problems with Math on the Trail.
Big Idea:
I can solve real-world problems involving addition and subtraction within 100 by using pictures, words, and/or a number sentence to solve.
Social Studies: Presidents' Day is Here!
Now, you will log onto ixl.com by clicking here. (Students know their individual login information and password.) You will want to make extra-sure that you've clicked on the red 2nd Grade tab, and then Social Studies at the top. You will need to click "See all 56 second grade skills" to find "Historical Figures," and finally B.6 Abraham Lincoln. Complete the activity. Those of you without Internet access will have the chance to complete the activity at school.
Big Idea:
We can identify and describe community celebrations, symbols and traditions and explain why they are important.
Handwriting Practice
Big Idea:
We can form letters correctly and space words and sentences properly so that writing can be read easily by another person.
Don't forget to end your day with our special song, "What A Wonderful World."
Happy Presidents' Day
