Principal's Message

Dear Whitney families,


It's hard to believe we are already in November! Time flies when you're having fun! We certainly have been learning and growing this year! November is one of my favorite months of the year. The temperature is finally where it is cold in the morning and beautiful during the day. The fall colors are in full swing. And there is a lot to be focused on with family and gratitude and caring in the weeks ahead. We certainly know this year has challenged us to learn and grow in different ways and for that we are truly grateful.


We have much to be grateful for here at Whitney Avenue. We have a wonderful, caring staff from our custodian, our office staff, rec aides, social workers, nutrition services, nurses, to all of our instructional assistants and teachers. I am grateful every day for the opportunity to work with all of them and I know your children are in good hands with them. We have supportive parents and community, to which we all say thank you for all that you do to make Whitney Avenue the school it is today. And finally, we have incredible students, who challenge themselves every day to learn and be engaged as well as challenging us to become better people. They are why we are here every day!

You should receive email updates from us from newsletters to important information each month. If you don’t, then we want to make sure that you do. For some of you, it may be that your email settings block our messages and for others, it may be that we do not have accurate information. We try to keep it up to date as well with our Newsletters and important information throughout the year. As always we are here to support you with whatever the need! I know we all have many questions and concerns about COVID, symptoms when sick, and testing. Please see below information regarding testing---Whitney Avenue will be a testing site one day a week on Mondays from 1:00-4:00 BY APPOINTMENT!! Please reach out to Whitney Avenue staff, social workers, teachers, or myself if you have any questions. We are here to assist your student and family and will persist until we find the resources you need. We can't hide that Whitney Pride! Go wildcats!

Whitney Avenue Daily Schedule

All Kindergarten students will attend M-F 8:15-12:15pm daily (unless shortened day). All 1st-5th Grade students will attend 8:15-2:45pm M, T, W, & F while attending 8:15-1:30pm on Thursdays.

What happens if my child becomes sick or has symptoms?

If your child is sent home, or is experiencing symptoms listed above, you must stay at home until you are symptom free for 24 hours AND either receive a documented negative COVID-19 test, OR a healthcare provider's note indicating the symptoms are related to an alternative diagnosis. This must be submitted to the school upon the return.

Parent Teacher Conferences November 15-19th Dismissal at 11:25am K-5

A parent-teacher conference is a great opportunity to:


  • share academic progress and growth based on classroom observations, testing data, assessments, portfolios, and assignments
  • learn from parents or guardians so you can be better informed about students' strengths, needs, behaviors, and learning styles
  • discuss enrichment or intervention strategies to support students' learning
  • discuss issues that may be interfering with students' learning and growth

Open Enrollment Lottery Monday, December 6, 2021, at 8 a.m through January 21, 2022, at 5 p.m.

The Open Enrollment Lottery is an annual process that allows families who live within the boundaries of San Juan Unified School District an opportunity to request a school of their choice, provided there is space available at the requested school and families are willing to provide transportation.

*Available space is determined by defined physical and program capacity of the school after placement of enrolled resident students.

  • Families may submit an Open Enrollment Lottery application during the priority window, which begins on Monday, December 6, 2021 at 8:00 am and ends on Friday, January 21, 2022 at 5:00 pm. Parents must submit a separate request for each student participating in the Open Enrollment Lottery. Parents may only select ONE SCHOOL on each child's Open Enrollment Lottery application. Parents/legal guardians can submit an Open Enrollment Lottery application for their student through one of the following options:

    • Online submission - Parents of currently enrolled San Juan Unified School District students may submit an Open Enrollment Lottery application through Parent Portal during the priority window. Parents of not currently enrolled San Juan Unified School district students will find a link to the Open Enrollment application on this webpage during the Open Enrollment Lottery priority window.

    • In person submission - You may visit San Juan Central Enrollment Center located at 3700 Garfield Avenue, Carmichael, CA 95608. Families may get help with online submissions for the Open Enrollment Lottery application in the enrollment center during business hours.

Help us with Masks!

Please help us in talking with your students about wearing masks properly and at all times in the classroom and strongly encouraged outside the classroom. It is a mandate that all students and staff must wear masks while indoors at school. If we need to meet to discuss our mask policy we are more than happy to do so. Also, having a properly fit mask everyday really help as well as having a back up incase one gets lost. If you can have your child ensure they walk out the door with 1-2 masks in their backpacks it would be greatly appreciated! We appreciate your cooperation!

Visitors are allowed on campus for official business in the office only. Now more than ever we ask that you call school prior to coming to set an appointment. We are hoping most questions, or support can be done over the phone, but if not we will set up a time for you to come to the site. We are here to support you Monday-Friday from 8:00am-3:00pm.

Arrival & Dismissal Times

We understand there are many different schedules a family has to adhere to in order to drop off and pick up students. In returning to school during COVID, we have to follow guidelines set forth from the county and district to remain safe at all times. We have to keep to our 7:50am for breakfast and 8:05am drop off time if not eating breakfast. Pick up at promptly 2:45am MTWF and 1:30pm on Thursdays. We are unable to allow gathering while on campus and have students here longer than the instructional time here on campus. We truly appreciate your support.

Safety in the Parking Lots

As we return to 5 days in-person, we know we have more traffic here on campus each day. Please be patient as we work to get students out of cars for arrival and into cars for dismissal. We are asking that you please also follow the traffic flows and stay inside the coned area, or flow of traffic in the back parking lot. Please also stay to the two lanes of traffic in the front parking lot. Family members at this time, may walk students to the classroom door (masks worn while on campus), however visitors must remain outdoors at this time. We want to ensure safety for all and we appreciate your support!

RESOURCE OF THE MONTH: 2-1-1 SACRAMENTO

2-1-1 Sacramento, a program of Community Link Capital Region, is a free confidential information and referral service that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling 2-1-1 or visiting their website at https://www.211sacramento.org/211/


Assistance is available in multiple languages, and services are accessible to people with disabilities. Their Call Specialists speak: Spanish, Hmong, Thai, Lao, Mien and English. Over 200+ additional languages can be assisted 24 hours a day via tele-interpretation. Utilizing a comprehensive computerized database of more than 1,600 nonprofit and public agency programs, trained information and referral specialists give personalized attention to each caller. Specialists can refer callers to a variety of service that best meet their needs.

Superintendent's Parent Advisory Committee (SPAC)

Who are SPAC members?

Each school principal selects a member of their parent community to represent the school at SPAC meetings. The only requirement is that you are a current parent at the school you represent. Selections are made in the first few weeks of school. If you have an interest in serving on the SPAC, please speak with your school principal as soon as possible.

What do SPAC members commit to?

Members of SPAC should attend each scheduled meeting. Depending on the members' preferences, meetings may be held three to four times a year. Members are also responsible for taking the information shared at SPAC meetings back to their school site to share with staff and other parents.
