What is Component 1E?
- Designing coherent instruction requires that our outcomes, assessments, materials, activities, teaching methods, and standards align.
- We must be knowledgeable of the state standards, curricular standards, and how they progress and build upon each other.
- Lessons need to advance and challenge students at appropriate levels.
- Designing instruction that enhances our students' understanding by relating content to state standards, knowledge of our students, outcomes, and assessments.
Why do we need to know about component 1E?
- Component 1E is important, because teachers must:
- Have a firm understanding of their content area and how to relate that content area to their students, and state standards
- Develop lessons that are thought provoking, challenging, and reach ALL learners.
- Group students mindfully and intentionally in the classroom.
- Create lessons that engage students with a variety of resources
Elements
Learning Activities
- The teacher designs instruction that is engaging, motivating, and advances students in their learning.
- Activities support a variety and diverse group of students.
- These activities are aligned with instructional outcomes, assessments, and state standards along with curricular guides.
Instructional materials and resources
- The teacher selects instructional aids that are appropriate for ALL learners.
- Technology is utilized appropriately in the classroom.
- Students' opinions are taken into consideration when selecting materials to use in the classroom.
Instructional groups
- When grouping students, teachers group students in an intentional manner.
- Groups are appropriate for students at all levels of learning.
- When appropriate, students are able to self select groups.
Lesson and unit structure
- The teacher creates lessons that are clear and sequenced in a way that enhances learning.
- Lessons allow for students to branch off in different directions, according to student needs, preferences, and differentiation techniques.
- Activities during the lesson progress in a way that is both logical and challenging.

- Unit plans that are connect learning activities, learning outcomes, assessments, state standards, and curricular guides.
