Emergency Drill Practice - Lockdown
On Friday November 18th all students will participate in a lockdown drill. This drill will be conducted in a trauma informed way. Students will be coached beforehand about what the drill will look like. Law enforcement will be in the building pushing into classes to review what students should do in case of emergency and answer and questions the students may have, Students will be given the following information about a possible lockdown situation and be taught what to do in response.
For students in K-3 your student will learn about Sammy the Sasquatch from Crittertopia, and the many
ways she practices staying safe. Crittertopia is kept safe by the Critter Elder’s magic but it’s
possible a curious human might wander into Crittertopia. While it’s unlikely a curious human
would wander into Crittertopia, Sammy and her friends still work to keep Crittertopia safe by
practicing Lockdown, “locks, lights, out of sight.”
Students will be given a handout with the short story, “Sammy the Sasquatch,” and an image of
Sammy to color. After reading the story, teachers will gather questions from students and send
these on to Sammy and her “friends” who will be visiting soon and will answer student
questions during their visit. Sammy the Sasquatch will tag along as a small stuffed animal, which
is one of the ways she stays safe when she leaves Crittertopia to visit the human world.
Sammy’s friends include Safety Coaches, people with expertise in school emergency
preparedness and management, and community safety partners like law enforcement officers
and fire/EMS personnel. This Team will empower students and provide choice throughout the
coaching session in the classroom, modeling how to do a lockdown and allowing students to
choose to practice together or opt out and simply observe.
For students in 4th and 5th grade the safety coaching team will visit the classroom and walk students through when we may have a lockdown and what students should do. They will then allow students to practice and answer any questions.
If you have any questions about the drills please reach out to Ms. Acosta at Adrienne.acosta@hoodriver.k12.or.us.
