Dear Mustang Families,
School Instructional Strategy - Teach Students What to Say Instead of “I Don’t Know”
As a school, our teachers have a common strategy to help students solve problems when they don’t know an answer. This strategy helps create a school-wide expectation of accountable conversation. You can use it at home with your middle school student as well.
Here’s how it works: We provide a poster for students that lists alternatives to saying “I Don’t Know.”
May I please have some more information?
May I please have some more time to think?
Would you please repeat the question?
Where could I find more information about that?
May I ask a friend for help?
This instructional strategy, coupled with our school-wide expectation that students speak and write in complete sentences, helps our students develop strong communication skills.
