Common Practices!
As we are developing our common practices at HBE. I’m seeing many things that every teacher can do help to avoid disruptions by ensuring the conditions of the classroom are optimal for student learning
The first thing teachers can do is greet students at the door. This is a great way to connect with students and determine what kind of day they are having. You can give a high-five, handshake, or hug. You can do any of these, but remember the purpose is to connect with kids! A recent study showed that by greeting students at the door it increased academic engagement by 20% and reduced disruptive behavior by 9%.
The next piece is establishing, maintaining, and restoring relationships: Building relationships with students through strategies like greeting them at the door is a good start. It’s also necessary to maintain them over the course of the school year and to repair them when conflicts arise. The stronger the relationship and the better we understand our students, the more knowledge and goodwill we have to draw on when the going gets tough. Give behavior-specific praise: It may seem counterintuitive but focusing on positive behavior and ignoring low-level problemed behavior can be more effective than punishing or disciplining students. Instead of focusing on specific students, offer praise for the behavior you want to reinforce.
You have to set clear expectations for every rule and procedure that you use. When developing the rules and procures you need to determine the steps that address teacher behavior, student behavior, and what you are going to do if the students do not respond. Then monitor monitor monitor your rules and expectations. Your presence is crucial to maintaining classroom management and to the effective delivery of instruction, and it’s a skill we can develop with effort.
I’m loving this journey we are all on in becoming master teachers for our students!
Keep Howling!
