A Message from the Administration
Welcome Back
by John Terko, Principal- Allen Brook School
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday vacation. The weather here felt like the end of January which made it tough to get outdoors. The good news is we have plenty of snow for the start of our ski program Tuesday, and milder temperatures.
I’m going to use this article to share events and happenings that are coming up in the near future. I do need to start with a reminder that winter clothes are very important at this time of year. With all the snow that has fallen, recess time is spent sledding and building, thus the importance of proper clothing.
I would also recommend a spare set of gloves and hats that students can keep in their lockers just in case.
I am also noticing more and more students arriving to school late. Allen Brook School starts at 8:00 am and WCS starts at 8:10, so it’s important that your child be in class by this time. Thank you in advance for making every effort to arrive on time.
The end of the marking period is next week for K-4 students. We are going through the next phase of assessments in preparation of teachers completing their report cards. Report cards will be going home on Friday, January 26. Parent Teacher conferences will take place on Friday, March 23.
A reminder that we don’t have school next Monday, January 15 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
We are nearing the end of the budget process for 2018-2019. The board has been working hard at presenting a respectable budget for the new Champlain Valley School District. There will be a budget meeting on Tuesday, January 23 from 6:00 - 7:00 pm in the Williston Central Dining Room. I encourage everyone to attend and ask questions. The more informed you are the better you understand the budget before Town Meeting Day.
The Allen Brook School will be celebrating Red Clover Books in February. Teachers are teamed up to read a certain book to all students in grades K through 2. At the end of two weeks, students will vote for their favorite book. Our librarian, Denise Wentz ,will be spearheading this event and will send the results into the Vermont Department of Libraries. Once all of the schools in Vermont submit their results, the number one book will be declared. Students enjoy this opportunity to mix with other students and hear some outstanding new books. The more we can create a love of reading the better prepared our students will be.

School- Based Early Ed Program Lottery
The CVSD School-based Early Education Programs are now accepting applications for a random peer lottery drawing for the 2018-19 school year. Our preschools are 5 STAR accredited licensed early education programs that provide play-based, developmentally appropriate environments for all children. Our curriculum is based on the Vermont Early Learning Standards (VELS) and Teaching Strategies Gold. We believe that a diverse classroom offers opportunities for adults and children to practice acceptance and compassion and also provides a broad range of learning experiences. Our programs follow the CVSD school calendar.
Peers who will be age 3 or older by September 1, 2018, but not yet 5 years old, are eligible to enter the lottery for our programs.
All applications must be received by February 9, 2018. Students will be selected via a lottery.
