The Week at a Glance
Weekly Concept: Take Action
Essential Question: What are ways people can take action?
Next week our class will be focusing again on the important skills covered during the last five weeks. Here are some activities you can do with your child at home to help reinforce the skills we’ll be reviewing and extending.
- Read together an opinion letter from a newspaper, magazine, or online publication.
- Write an opinion letter together that you might want to send to the publication.
- Ask your child to present the letter as a short speech to family members.
Before your child presents the letter, discuss this checklist.
√ Review your letter. Did you stay on topic?
√ Make eye contact with the audience.
√ Ask your audience if they have any comments about your opinions.
Showing interest in your child’s reading, writing, and speaking will help his or her progress during the year.

Timeline Book Project
The students did an amazing job with their final book project of the year, and the kiddos have sure enjoyed learning from others. The timelines were very nicely done and even more nicely presented. I thank you for any support that you offered your child with this homework assignment.
Summer Reading
Attention parents: even though the school year is almost over, it’s not too late to help your child become a better reader before the new school year even begins. Summer is an important time for students to keep reading and improve their language skills. If your child hasn’t been reading regularly over the summer breaks, he or she may be in danger of the “summer slide”—a decline in their reading ability. I would recommend that your child sign up for the awesome summer reading program at the Union County Public Library. Click here for a list of suggestions from the Indiana Department of Education for your child. If you need further convincing that reading at home is important, please check out the statistics below.
Summer Meals
There will be a summer feeding program offered at three locations in Union County from May 22 to June 29. Students may get a breakfast snack, or come by for lunch,...or get both! This program is absolutely free of cost to any Union County student. The locations will be Union County High School cafeteria, Union County Public Library, and College Corner Union School cafeteria. I hope some of our kiddos will take advantage of this generous offer.
Whitewater Memorial State Park Wilderness Day Camp
During June 11th - 21st, Whitewater Memorial State Park will be hosting their very first Wilderness Day Camp at Whitewater Memorial State Park! The goal of the Wilderness Camp is to provide children (ages 8-11) with an understanding of and experiences in a wide variety of outdoor activities. I think it sounds like a fun and exciting summertime learning opportunity. For more information click here, and to register your child please contact Interpretive Naturalist, Kristie Ridgway. Phone: 765-328-4189 Email: kridgway@dnr.in.gov Registration is REQUIRED.
Next Week's Share Topic
We’ve talked about grandparents, moms, and siblings. Now let’s hear about dads! How old is Dad? Where does he work? What are his hobbies? Feel free to share about an uncle or other special male figure in your life.
Banana Split Party
If you've volunteered to provide items for our multiplication facts banana split party, please send them in on Thursday, May 17th. Thank you so much for your generosity.
Library News
Students have checked out library books for the final time of the school year. Books were due today. If your child did not fulfill this responsibility, please make sure (s)he follows through with the returned book(s) on Monday. Also, don't forget about the Buy One Get One (BOGO) Free Book Fair from May 14-18. Please find additional information about the fair in today's Friday folder.
Field Day
Our annual LES Field Day Wednesday, May 16th. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for this day, is wearing gym shoes, and has applied sunscreen, as this is an all-day outdoor event. As always, water bottles are not only welcome, but they are recommended so that your child stays hydrated throughout the day. Remember, for the safety of our students we welcome visitors/spectators in the stands only.
