February Newsletter
February 5, 2021
Dear Maple Families,
We have had an exciting week to start the month of February as we look forward to watching the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl this weekend.
The PTO sponsored Valentine's Day party will take place next Thursday, 2/11. Please make sure any cards and/or Valentine boxes are at school today, Friday, 2/5, in order for items to quarantine before being distributed. There is no school on Friday, 2/12, due to teacher meetings. Smithville schools are in session on President's Day, Monday, 2/15, to make up a previously missed snow day.
This month's leadership activity and virtual assembly will take place on Friday, February 26th. We are working hard to academic, and behavior goals this month.
Wishing You Well,
Dr. Rena Hawkins, Principal, hawkinsr@smithville.k12.mo.us
Ashley Doll, Assistant Principal, dolla@smithville.k12.mo.us

Counseling Highlights from Mrs. Hough
This month we’re talking about the beautiful character trait of Kindness. The dictionary defines it as: “the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.” But it is so much more than that! The definition we are using in class is:
Kindness: the choice to act with words, gifts, or actions to
bring appreciation, positivity, and encouragement to others and yourself.
The key part of this definition? Kindness is a choice that we get to make every day to bring good things into our lives and the world. Those good things can look like more than just some kind words; Kindness is given through our actions and our encouragement and our attitude and our gifts. We will spend time thinking about how to be kind to ourselves, to our environment, to animals, and to one another. We will get to experience meaningful words through compliments and feel the joy that comes from showing appreciation to others.

The Maple Library Leaflet with Mrs. Kathcart
It’s February and we are reading about football and the activities students love to do. We shared a book titled, Don’t Throw It to Mo! This story is about a boy who LOVES football but he’s smaller than his teammates and has trouble catching the ball. It’s fun when a book has a happy ending and the students cheer for the main character. We give this book FIVE STARS!!!
For the last several months we have worked many hours making signs for the nonfiction book shelves. We devised a plan to hold the signs and created them so students can easily find the subjects they enjoy. This is an ongoing project that will take many months to complete but it is great to see progress.
Have you ever wanted to learn a foreign language? Did you know that if a person is bilingual, they can earn 10%-20% more per year in many professions? Our fourth through sixth grade students learned to access a database on the Mid-Continent Public Library student resource page that helps them learn foreign languages. This database makes learning a new language fun and it can be accessed from anywhere. The instructions are below:
Click on Research and Learning
Click on Homework Help for Kids - View Resources
Find “Muzzy Online”
Choose the language you want to learn and begin playing the games
Keep calm and read on!
