In June 1776, the Second Continental Congress which included Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and Benjamin Franklin were meeting in Philadelphia to write the Declaration of Independence.

- Governments should be created to protect people's rights and freedoms.
- People should be ruled by themselves and not by a king or any kind of monarchy.
- All men are created equal.

In July 4, 1776 Congress approved the Declaration of Independence.
Thomas Jefferson's personal beliefs were mirrored in the Declaration of Independence. He believed that governments are created to protect people's rights and freedoms. In addition he believed that people should rule themselves and not be ruled by a king. Including the equality of all men. The Declaration of Independence is very important because without it we would be under British rule.
