What is Heaven's gate

Heaven's Gate was an American UFO religious group and was founded in the 1970s. This group was led by Marshall Applewhite. Applewhite had a best friend named Bonnie Nettles, who helped him create this cult. The people that were in the group believed they were going to have to catch the Hale-Bop comet to get to Heaven's gate. They could only catch this comet during a certain time that they thought the comet was near. They were convinced that the Earth was going to be "recycled" and the only way to survive was to leave is as fast as possible.

Where was Heaven's Gate cult?

The Heaven's Gate group was at a mansion in San Diego, California. The mass suicide was on March 27, 1997.

What did they do?

They desocialized from what from they were already used to and resocialized to something new. Their thoughts were completely changed and their views were different because they were manipulated by Marshall Applewhite.

They anticipated or knew that they were going to die in the end.

Voluntary change- They did this because the cult wanted to and they knew that they didn't have to.

Marshall Applewhite used cultural transmission to tell others what he thought so that they would believe him.

The mansion was isolated and the group kept themselves around people who had the same beliefs as them.

Applewhite was exhibiting what he thought about Heaven's Gate and how they would get there.

Mass media was the reason why everyone knew about the mansion suicide.

The end of the clan

On March 26, 1997, group members in Heaven's gate cult committed a mass suicide and 39 people died. Before their death, they ate pudding or applesauce with lethal drugs and alcohol. The cult members thought that by ending their life, they could escape and be transported to a spaceship.
