For the Parents and Patrons of Fulton Public Schools
Back to School Issue August 2015
A message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Patrons,
A new exciting school year is almost here! FPS faculty and staff are in their classrooms getting ready for your student(s), transportation routes will be out soon, classroom lists will be posted, and schedules are ready for pickup.
New Administrators are in three Buildings and one in the Central Office. At Fulton High School, Mr. Chris Mincher is now the Principal with Mrs. Kati Boland moving from Middle School Science to High School Assistant Principal. Mrs. Beth Houf will be the FMS Principal, moving from McIntire Elementary and Steven Kerr will be moving from a High School Social Studies position to Assistant Principal at FMS. New to the district is Mark Clements, joining the McIntire staff as Building Principal. Finally, Mrs. Karrie Millard is joining the District as Director of Special Services.
Breakfast in the classroom is being initated at at all elementary buildings. All students in the building may eat breakfast daily at no charge. Research indicates breakfast is a critical meal to prepare students for the day. We are optimistic that Breakfast In the Classroom will help your student prepare for a good school day.
Implementation of each student having access to a one to one learning device has been a Board of Education Objective since 2012. (Comprehensive School Improvement Plan Objective 3.2) Hence, this year each student in grades 6 through 12 will be provided a personal learning device or Chrome Book. Students will be able to access a variety of required and support materials with the device at school or other locations with internet access. As a parent , throughout the school year, please take a few minutes each evening to ask questions of your student about their daily classroom activities.
Many other activities and information items are detailed at www.fulton58.org. Please feel to use this resource anytime, or call me or any other staff member if we can provide assistance.
I am anticipating a great school year! Please join the FPS staff in helping your student(s) have a great year, also.
My very best regards,
Jacque A. Cowherd, Ed.D.

Breakfast in the Classroom
Is the morning rush at your house a mad dash to get out the door with your children barely having time to grab their homework much less eat a nutritious breakfast? If this sounds familiar you will be relieved to know that getting that important morning start will no longer be a challenge.
We are excited to announce that beginning with the start of school, on August 19, 2015, your child will have a nutritious breakfast available to them daily to eat in the classroom. They will have the opportunity to eat breakfast with their classmates and get the fuel they need to get through the morning ready to learn. Breakfast is offered FREE to all students, however, if you do not want your child to participate, they do not have to eat the school breakfast.
How does Breakfast in the Classroom work?
Each day before school breakfast will be prepared and delivered to the halls on a cart. As students come to school, they will go to the food cart, select their breakfast, and go to their room to eat. Breakfast will be part of the morning routine. Wipes will be provided for the students to clean desks and trash will be placed into a rolling trash can outside the classroom for removal; no food is left inside the classroom.
What foods are served in Breakfast in the Classroom?
An entrée, a fruit &/or juice, and milk are available daily. Entrées are nourishing and easy to eat for all students at their desk. They include popular breakfast items such as mini pancakes and flavored waffles, cereal bars, and muffins. The breakfast menus are included with the lunch menus on the district website and are available to the students each month at the school.
What are the benefits of Breakfast in the Classroom?
Research consistently shows that hungry children do not effectively learn. Students who participate in the breakfast program concentrate better and remember more of what they learn, perform better academically and have better school attendance. Also, their overall dietary intake is better than that of non-participating students. When Breakfast in the Classroom is served, every student is able to start the school day ready to learn. This continues throughout the morning without hunger related disruptions.
It is our hope that the Breakfast in the Classroom program will dramatically increase the percentage of students who eat breakfast. The traditional service of breakfast in the cafeteria does not provide all of the students with enough time to eat breakfast before school starts. All students will now have the opportunity and time to eat breakfast at school.
If you have any questions, comments or suggestions about this breakfast program you can contact the school’s kitchen manager, principal or Rhonda Fletcher, Director of Food Service at 573-590-8045. We are very excited for this program to start at the beginning of school. Please share this exciting news with your child!
