Principal Notes
Cheyenne Families-
Fall is definitely in the air, and the weather is cooling off, especially in the mornings. I appreciate that our students feel at home at Cheyenne, but we ask you to keep all blankets and bedroom slippers or houseshoes at home. Students can benefit by wearing a jacket and maybe even a hat and gloves to be prepared for changing temperatures.
We hope you had time to read the latest email from Dr. Grunewald, which relaxes measures in our COVID mitigation strategies. We look forward to making those adjustments in our future planning meetings with staff and our PTO.
There have been a lot of questions regarding student attendance. Would you please read the district policy, which outlines attendance guidelines and expectations? Policy 4200 & Regulations PK-8 Attending school on time and daily is essential for our students every day. School starts at 7:40 with our advisory class, and attendance begins at 7:40 am. Students absent for medical reasons benefit from an excused medical absence by turning in a doctor's note within 5 days of the absence. If your child is at risk of being chronically absent, you will receive a phone call or email from your child's grade-level counselor and then administrator. Edmond does have a truancy ordinance. Attendance matters and student absences are on the parent portal.
We are also finishing our first round of Mustang Mania, student choice Thursday. Students will be choosing their next mania class this week. Here is a short video of our students participating in just a few mania classes.
Winter sports have begun, and we look forward to our first basketball games and wrestling matches. Schedules can be found here.
Today, Sunday is the last day to order winter spirit wear. These items make great holiday presents! See purchase details above.
Have a wonderful weekend!

#THinkBeforeYouPost
We will begin to focus on #thinkbeforeyoupost awareness over the next two weeks.
When I was in middle school, our mode of communication was land-line phones, notes passed in school, or just good old-fashioned talking. My mom always reminded me to be careful when talking because I never knew who was listening. I remember my mom and grandma shushing me at public and family gatherings for saying things aloud that probably were best spoken softly or in a private conversation. It was important to them to teach me where, when, and what things could be said publicly, privately, or not at all. Words are powerful, and we must have an awareness of when and how to use them appropriately. I quote a line from a Cher song all the time to our students- "Words are like weapons; they wound sometimes"
Our students, and my children, have a much greater task than I had in 1987 in middle school. Their primary form of communication involves applications such as Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, messenger, texts, GroupMe, gaming chats, and more. If I were in middle school now, my mom would be following me on every platform I joined as well as looking through my phone each night. She would have spent money on a program to control my access and to supervise my use. She would have used this information to teach me how to shush appropriately online.
Unsupervised use of devices can lead students into situations that they typically wouldn't have engaged in person with friends or acquaintances. We hope our #thinkbeforeyoupost campaign will help students be mindful of words, pictures, and messages they compose and send through their devices.
While my talking as a teenager could cause damage, my words were not broadcast via the internet with the potential to reach hundreds or thousands of people. I could also retract my comments a bit more easily. Our students post something online, and it is there forever. The idea of forever online is difficult for our students to understand. They believe that just by deleting, taking down a post, or seeing it disappear means they are free and clear from any allegations of wrong-doing. It is tough for them to understand that their post online is there and can rarely be undone.
With all of this in mind, please partner we us to help teach our students/children to "think before they post" Encourage them; if they hear or see something suspicious, then say something to an adult and law enforcement as soon as possible.
Anytime our students report online situations, statements, posts, videos, or pictures; we have a process we follow at school to investigate. We want you to know that we thoroughly investigate any situation and involve law enforcement as necessary. We want our workplace and school to be safe. My family is a part of the Edmond community, and I know that their teachers and staff in our district strategically handle all safety issues with the utmost importance.
Our School Resource Officers will provide educational lessons regarding #thinkbeforeyou post for our students in 7th grade November 15th and 16th through Social Studies. Your support is appreciated by continuing these discussions at home. Below are some resources for your reference.
#thinkbeforeyoupost is a goal that we can all work towards each day.

Please Remind Your Child About Their Student IDs
EVERY student has been issued a Student ID Badge. Per the District Policy, this MUST be worn EVERY day with the district-issued lanyard and the picture must face out. 6th graders are maroon, 7th grade green, and 8th grade blue.
If your student does not have their badge they will need to print a temporary badge for the day as they enter the school. We have three kiosks.
It is VERY important that the student remember their badge each and every day. A temporary badge should only be needed on a rare occasion not for everyday use.
If your student has lost their badge please have them come into the office with $5 to have a replacement badge made. After the third temporary badge students will serve lunch detention and on the 5th time alternative in-school placement for the day.
Please continue to remind your child to put their badge in the same spot every day so that they have it with them every day. AS they walk out the door or get into the car ask them these two things… Do you have your ID? Is your Chromebook charged?
Student IDs help us know who should be present on our campus, they are also used to check in and out of the office, to scan for lunch, and the library.

Update COVID Exposure Protocols and Reminders
Required Quarantines to End Updated Oct 4
September 23 District Establishes Covid Positive Threshold Which Could Change Quarantine Procedures
It is extremely important to contact the school immediately when or if your child test positive or if you plan to quarantine your child based on family exposure. Time is important because contact tracing immediately begins once the school has been notified. Our communication to families includes an automated phone call as well as a detailed email regarding quarantine, etc.
Here are links to the district webpage regarding these updates and protocols-

Students who test positive or quarantine (by choice) are able to complete work through courses on Canvas. Students should log in each day to check the course agenda page and if they have questions they should reach out to their teachers. Scroll down to learn more about canvas. There are several links to assist.
Remember student COVID absences are for symptomatic students, diagnosed positive Covid isolations, and exposure quarantines. When students are too ill and cannot complete work from home they will be coded as a COVID absence. We want students to rest and recover and make up work when they feel better. Self-quarantines will need to be determined with our COVID administrator, Mr. Link Lowe.
We will keep you informed with the latest information regarding health and safety updates. Thank you to those families that have contacted us regarding their student and self-reported COVID exposures or positive test results. Our goal is to keep the education process moving forward for your student.

If your student does forget their lunch or something they need for school, we have a cart in our front lobby with grade levels. This will be rolled back into the common area for the students to pick up their items during passing. Please drop off LUNCHES or SCHOOL SUPPLIES ONLY.
If you are dropping off an instrument or athletic equipment we will place this by the back office door for them to come up and get during their passing or after school. Please make arrangements with your student regarding these items and where to retrieve them.
Use the remind codes below to receive messages from our Parent Organization!
Student Chromebook Information
All students should CHARGE their Chromebooks each night. There are important updates that need to occur on these devices regularly and students will need to shut them down and restart.
All students received an email regarding their Annual Student Review. If they misplaced that email here are the instructions for completing the review before school starts.
Student Technology Protection Plan (STPP) - All families are strongly encouraged to purchase an STPP for their students to help protect them from large fees associated with accidental damage to the school-issued Chromebook. Search InTouch on the district website to purchase the 20-21 STPP. This plan goes into effect on 8/12.
