Nurse's Corner

With sick-season upon us, the health office would like to clarify the differences between a sore throat, Strep, and Tonsillitis. Often times we think they are interchangeable, however, they do not mean the same thing.

Tonsillitis refers to tonsils that are inflamed.

Strep is an infection of the throat caused by the bacteria Streptococcus. Often times, strep causes the tonsils to be inflamed as well as possibly the surrounding tissue of the throat near the tonsils. Strep symptoms often depend on the age of the child. School-age children often present with an extremely painful throat, fever over 102 degrees, swollen neck glands, and pus on the tonsils.

Sore throats are most likely caused by viruses and may only cause inflammation of the throat surrounding the tonsils, and not the actual tonsils themselves. They are usually not caused by strep. In the case of viral infections, antibiotics are not necessary and recovery comes in about a 7-10 day period.

If your child has a sore throat that persists, whether or not it is accompanied by a fever or any other symptoms, you should call your pediatrician.

No matter what the cause of throat pain, chances are it is contagious. Proper rest and treatment, if warranted, can help speed up recovery time and prevent more serious infections from developing elsewhere in the body. Please adhere to our district policies and use your best judgement when deciding to send a student to school. Always keep in mind that one day off from school can prevent many days off from school for both your child and other students as well.
